The Time Is At Hand!

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Comic Books were introduced to the American public in the early 20th century. Since then they have been reinvented countless times. Now they have evolved once more, but this instance, it’s a quantum leap! We have arrived on new shores, the new world of the Information Age has just gotten underway. The Industrial Age is over. Comic books, magazines, and news papers are being replaced by web sites at an astonishing rate as we enter into the 21st century. Manual distribution and limited supply are no longer an issue, digital content is available to anyone with a computer and a connection to the World Wide Web. No need to worry about missing an issue of your favorite comic book anymore. No chance of being turned down by the manager of the local comic shop who won’t order that obscure title you been anxious to snag onto. Now you can get it online right on your personal computer.

Many comics can not only be browsed with your favorite web browser, many are available to be downloaded in pdf files to be opened with a pdf reader program such as Adobe Acrobat Reader and even printed in full color on your very own Ink Jet printer. Other online comics have limited run old style printed companion issues or collected Trade Paperback volumes for sale OR print on demand digital printed copies available for ordering. T-shirts, mouse pads, calendars and all manner of merchandise are often also available directly from the comic creators.

Now comes Mega Comics Group! In the next 30 days we will build this site. First with comics from our past publishing venture: Legacy Comics, and even some earlier stuff. Then we’ll launch our new comics designed specifically for this new era!

Yes, the time is here and we have arrived! What’s not to love about this age we live in! Enjoy!

Humants # 2 Solicitation 1991

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Humants #2 Solicitation FlyerWe are finishing up the first Humants story from issue #1 today so it is appropriate to show you this ad flier we sent out to distributors back in 1991 for Issue # 2. It shows the cover and some teaser info for that issue. Again Project: New Man was the back up feature and you can see what was originally to be the back cover in the lower right corner. We changed that cover for one by Thomas O’Conner before it went to press. I’m not sure where that original cover is but I’m trying to locate it. This was a re-solicitation, we missed our deadline for the first one and had to reschedule. That’s always a big mistake with Diamond Distributors and the others that were still around then.

On another subject: I would just like to thank everyone out there for visiting and supporting this site and our two regular comic features. We have been promoting MCG.com through ads with Project Wonderful and in just a little less than 2 months we’ve gotten about 10,000 visitors. I don’t know if that’s great as for as other web comics go but it really warms our hearts! We plan to keep adding content, doing our best to entertain you with our comics and earn your time to keep coming back! We’ve heard from some of you but we’d love to hear from more! Some don’t want to leave comments on pages but had rather use an eform or email, so we are going to set that up very soon. We’ll be adding to the promised Character Guides and lots more so stay tuned. Again…THANKS!

Don’t forget to click the image to see a larger view.

Be sure to check out Sunday’s comic book posts for Project: New Man and Humants’! Have a great day!

Alpha-Omega • APAs • PNM #3 Pages 17-20 Updated

Friday, April 13th, 2018

Welcome to Friday’s Mega Comics Group Updates!

Last week we began a series of blogs spotlighting the talents behind Mega Comics Group starting with our fearless leader, El Marko. This week we hoped to bring you a bio on Freazie White, Jr. BUT ye ol’ Mega Minions did not manage to get all the data on Mr. White in time. However, be not afraid! We will get Freazie’s story in here soon. Even if we have to make it all up! ULP! Did we say that out loud!? NAH! We wouldn’t do that!  Regardless of the trend of Fake News these days, we here at Mega Comics Group will just give you cold, hard facts! Since most everyone running this gig is bigger than us that’s a lot safer! 😉

But wait! In the meanwhile, we have a few words on the Amateur Press Association known as Alpha Omega which is where this all began for Mark Poe and Freazie White Jr. So really we are indirectly continuing our series spotlighting the talents behind Mega Comics Group. So there! Nee-yah! 😛

Alpha-Omega

Alpha Omega #2 Razor's Edge Debut by Mark PoeHe can’t remember…
That’s what Mark Poe told us. He can’t remember where he heard about Alpha-Omega. But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves. We should tell you what Alpha-Omega is. As we teased in our little introduction, AO is an amateur press association. What’s that? An APA is a group of people who produce individual pages or magazines that are sent to a Central Mailer for collation and distribution to all members of the group.

Alpha Omega #2 Another early drawing of Razor's Edge by Mark Poe

APAs were a way for widely distributed groups of people to discuss a common interest together in a singleforum before the advent of electronic bulletin boards or the Internet. Many were founded in the 1930s andlater by fans of science fiction, comics, music, cinema and other topics as a way to develop writing, designand illustration skills. Many professional journalists, creative writers and artists practised in APA groupsand email mailing lists.

Alpha Omega #5 Razor's Edge art by Freazie White, Jr.A Central Mailer (CM) (sometimes called a Distribution Manager or Official Editor) is the coordinator of anAPA. The heart of the role is the distribution of the association’s publication to its members. The CM manages the subscription lists and the deadlines to which the association works. The CM is usuallyresponsible for chasing members to ensure maximum participation although some APAs simplyaccumulate contributions between deadlines and mail out whatever is available at the mailing deadline.

Where the APA requires the submission of multiple copies by contributors, the CM merely collates the contributions. Some APAs involve the submission of camera ready copy; in such cases the CM arrangesthe reproduction of the material. Most APAs require the members to submit a minimum amount ofmaterial in a specified format to a specified number of mailings. This minimum activity (abbreviated to “minac“) is usually specified as something in the form of (for example): “at least two A4 pages to at least two out of every three mailings”. Most APAs also require each member to maintain a credit balance in a central funds account to cover common reproduction costs and postage.

Alpha Omega #6 Cover Art for Razor's Edge by Mark PoeIn most APAs the CM provides an administrative report listing the contents of each mailing and any business information associated with the association. This can include financial accounts, membershipinformation and some news items. Although most APAs have predetermined deadlines at regular intervals it is normal practice for the CM to specify the next mailing deadlines explicitly in each mailing.

Although some APAs are autocratic, most run on a democratic basis and the CM usually chairs any discussions and arranges any management meetings.

APAs that require members to submit multiple copies of their contribution (commonly called “apazines”) usually set a limit to the number of members and run a waiting list if this becomes necessary. In many cases people on the waiting list are permitted to contribute to mailings and may receive excess apazines provided by the members.

The first comics APA was started by Jerry Bails in 1964 in the United States. Called CAPA-alpha (sometimes abbreviated to K-a) it grew to its present limit of 40 members. It has become the archetype for most subsequent comics APAs. Its members have included Dwight Decker, Mark Evanier, Carl Gafford, Fred Patten, Richard and Wendy Pini, Roy Thomas, Dan Alderson, Rick Norwood, Don Markstein, and Don and Maggie Thompson. Michael Barrier‘s animation fanzine Funnyworld began as a CAPA-alpha contribution.

Capa-Alpha #24 Circa 1964.Decker and Gafford were also founding members of the minicomics co-op the United Fanzine Organization. The difference in a co-op and an APA is that an APA is helmed by a central mailer, to whom the members send copies of their publications. The central mailer then compiles all the books into one large volume, which is then mailed out to the membership in “mailings” (called “bundles” by a few APAs). In a co-op, however, there is no central mailer; the members distribute their own works, and are linked by a group newsletter, a group symbol that appears on each member work, and a group checklist in every “member zine.”

Capa-Alpha #360 - 30 Year AnniversaryThe first European comics APA was called PAPA and launched by a group of comics fans in January 1978. Soon renamed BAPA (for “British APA”), it celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2003, but folded the following summer.

The APA model was picked up by artists in the 1980s. Groups of artists contributed elements of combined duplicated artworks that omitted the conversational elements of the fandom-based APAs (these pieces are sometimes called “assembly art”). During this same period, a group of British science fiction and comics fans also set up a short-lived “tape APA”, contributing music and spoken word to a central anthology.

The latest innovation is a digital distribution, e-APA. Copies of past “mailings” are archived at the online resource eFanzines.

Mark’s Remarks: Mark's Profile Pic

Freazie and I met years before as members of an Amateur Press Association (APA) called Alpha-Omega. Freazie read one of my submissions entitled Razor’s Edge, a synopsis for a new book I was working on, and maybe even the first chapter, I don’t recall right now. Freazie loved it and called me up. We hit it off and began working together on Razor’s Edge. Freazie was penciling and rewriting it to fit the comic book format. I inked his work and we began submitting the pages to Alpha-Omega. These were fun days and we learned a lot.

Even though Alpha-Omega was a comic book APA, what really set it apart from all the rest was it was a Christian APA. I think it may have been the first Christian Comics APA, but I can’t say for sure on that fact. What that meant was we tried to do comics, art, stories and articles about comics from a Christian viewpoint. I started as a contributor in Mailing Issue #2 of A-O and later, around Mailing Issue #52, I think it was, I became the Central Mailer. I served in that capacity for 2 years, which was the normal term for the CM. A-O was great for me and prepared me for not only my chosen career in comics work but also provided training in how to be a professional Commercial Artist. I look back at those years now and realize God used those times to train me. My time in A-O lasted until Mailing Issue #69 when I decided that with my full-time Graphic Art job, producing Comic Books and being a husband and father, I had too much on my plate to continue with A-O. In a way, in 1996 when I left A-O, it was as if I had graduated art school. As it turned out, that was the closest to attending art school I would ever get.

My time with Dimension Graphics, Magi Graphics and Legacy Comics happened while I was serving in A-O. Freazie and I started publishing Small Press comics under the name of Magi Graphics. Freazie wrote and penciled  and I inked and did my art/printing production work to publish Capt. Testament. Capt. T featured many of the characters from the Humants. Capt. T led us to publishing a few issues of The Herald for Small Press which later grew into the independent Legacy Comics’ title The Humants. We worked on those characters in the small press until about 1990, then we began planning to move into the Independent Comics market. which is where Legacy Comics began and that brings us full circle to Mega Comics Group and this web site. More to come!

Onward! Mark

Archive's Spotlight

Archive’s Spotlight is designed to look at all which has come before and add new comments as well. This posting we are reviewing Project New Man 3 Page 17-19!

______________________________

Project: New Man 3 Page 17 OLD

Project: New Man New Man 3 Page 17Project: New Man #3 – Page 17-19– Once again we have made more changes in the art mainly in the backgrounds and specifically in the simulated  Duo-Shade tones used to produce the black and white pages of Project: NewMan #3. As usual, since beginning these revisions we are posting a couple of examples here which show what it looked like before and results after the adjustments. In all cases we have found the originals were too dark and in most cases the tones were not consistent due to either old chemistry in the developer for the original dartboards or else some flow in the dartboards themselves.

We are showing you two examples here but you can see 3 pages have been updated as you go from page 17 through 19. In the case of page 19 there was no background halftones originally. If you got to the current page 20 you can see what we mean. Those were the first pages by Chris Torres and Mark Poe which were reproduced straight form the original inked art with no additional halftones. The scans of pages 19 through 32 for Project NewMan # 3 were of better quality than the old Duo-Shade boards from the previous chapter.

Project: New Man 3 Page 18 OLD

Project: New Man New Man 3 Page 18

The original digital scans of these pages were done 10 years or more back. Adobe Photoshop and some of the other programs we use to clean up the images and add the effects, make corrections and changes has evolved a lot in that time. We can do a lot more with it now than we could 10 years ago. It sure beats the old school way we did these pages back in the early ’90’s!

Check back next week for more pages in PNM #3 as we continue updating these books for printing with Ka-Blam Comic Book Printing and digital sales at IndyPlanet as well as DriveThru Comics.
