The Patriots win their sixth Super Bowl!
We have a 2018 World Champion!
As predicted the New England Patriots have prevailed fro a 6th time over a worthy opponent to win the 53rd Super Bowl! We all expected a good, competitive and high scoring game. Oh well, two out of three ain’t bad as the ol’ song said. Yes, it was a good game depending on your viewpoint. For diehard football fans who have been around long enough to remember the days of tough defenses that ruled the league it was a real hoot! Like one commentator said it was a “throwback game.” This was a shock for most who had gotten use to some high scoring offense this season like has rarely been seen before in Pro Football. It was competitive to be sure, mainly on defense. But is was not the be offensive shootout most of us expected. It was all field goals until half way through the fourth quarter when the Patriots posted their first and only touchdown. The final was 13 – 3. not the flashiest victory by the Patriots but a win is win.
But as we promised history was made! Coach Bill Belichick is the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl, and the only coach to ever win 6 Super Bowls. Tom Brady is the only quarterback to ever win 6 Super Bowls. Neither one has any plans for retirement, so it is likely we will see them both in the hunt for another Super Bowl win next year and possibly for 2 – 3 years after that. Of course, there are no guarantees on this scenario since we never know what else might happen n that time frame.
Super Bowl commercials are usually one of the great side benefits of the Big Game. This year there were only a few we all thought was really funny. One of our favorites was the Walmart movie and TV cars ad featuring the original KITT from Knight Rider, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, one of the Batmobiles and many more. Then there was this one…
Mark’s Remarks
When Losers Are Winners!
Did you see the post game interviews after the Super Bowl? Some of it was a little funny, and some was profound.
First the media folks just could not seem to get Tom Bradys attention. It was humorous to watch. Tom was more interested in shaking hands and thanking his team mates, coaches, team owners and friends from the other team. But he did eventually get around to talking to reporters too. It’s understandable, the press always swarms the quarterbacks and coaches and they often miss speaking to those they want to show gratitude or congratulate because one reporter after another sucks the air out of the room! 😉 So, this time, the press had to humble themselves a little and wait patiently for Mr. Brady to come back and talk to them. Very appropriate.
Later the coaches gave their assessments of the game. Most are more interested in what the winners of the Big Game have to say, and rightly so. But right here I want to draw your attention to Coach Sean McVay, of the L.A. Rams. We have seen it all from indignation to melancholy to shock, but this time the loser displayed sincere humility. How do I know it was sincere? Well, some folks try to put on an act of humility while its obvious by their words, tone of voice and/or actions it’s just an act. But as I listened to Coach McVay, the youngest head coach at age 33 to take his team to a Super Bowl, it was very apparent this guy really learned from his experience. He took all the responsibility for the loss without blaming it on any one. It was not the players fault, or the assistant coaches, or the fans, or politics, or any of a hundred different excuses which we’ve heard others make.
Now, don’t read between the lines here, there is nothing there! This is not a critique of any one head coach or any individual at all. This reflects more on where we are in society today. It seems like one in a million will take full responsibility for their actions. Many will say it, but only one in a million show evidence that it is anything other than lip service. How many really take responsibility and make changes to attempt to have a different outcome the next time the opportunity to win comes around? How many had rather just be a victim, blame it on everyone and everything and never go anywhere? It’s the ol’ “Nobody loves me” syndrome!
Winners don’t think about why they might lose, they think about how they will win! That one key will fill a person with such positive energy that they don’t have room for anything negative. When they win then they celebrate a little while and get back to work. When they lose they shake it off and get back to work. It’s that simple. They don’t live in the past, they live for the future. Our whole nation could benefit from that philosophy. We have whole cultures in this country that are so hung up on the past, either what they did or didn’t do or what someone did to them and they never go anywhere. They are like a car stuck in the mud. Many of these people call themselves Progressives. How can you progress if you are always looking back? See how far you get in your car if you are focused exclusively on what is happening in your rearview mirror! The rearview mirror is a necessary tool if used correctly. But if you focus on that and nothing else you are sure to have a wreck!
Coach Sean McVay and his the L.A. Rams will be back in the Super Bowl. That is, they will IF they maintain the humility to learn, make adjustments. and go forward. Now, THAT is progressive! 😉
Onward!– Mark
Remember the Facebook Comic Con?
The FBCC was instrumental in the establishment of this web site. Unfortunately it’s gone now, but it lives on the memories of those of us who remember it. For those of you who don’t, here’s a peek at what it was all about in this original post from 2009, minus the links to the original Facebook pages which no longer exist. Just another extra courtesy of the MCG.com 10th Anniversary Celebration. You’re welcome. 😉

Michael Netzer, formerly known as Mike Nasser, is your host and the founder of the event. Mike produced some awesome work back in the 70’s and 90’s for Marvel and DC and is no slouch when it comes to quality artwork either! He did the art for the Facebook Comics Con Poster/Header seen above. Folks, do you really want to miss this? No, we didn’t think so. CU there!
Yet Even More of Marvel’s Greatest Covers!
Everyone so loved the 60’s Marvel cover galleries we put together a 3rd collection.
Back in the day, comic books were displayed on the ol’ spinner racks strategically placed at the market, corner drugstore, mom and pop store, newsstand or even some gas stations. (This was before convenience stores.) The cover art was carefully planned out and executed. The verbiage on the covers likewise. The logos and even the placement of the infamous Comics Code Seal of approval. These were not paintings, they were bold cartoon drawings lovingly produced by masters of the craft with flat solid colors contrasting with each other vying for the attention of the comic book buyer.
As kids we had no comic book specially shops so we would run all over town to each location we had embedded into the built in maps in our heads, seeking out the latest issue of the titles we faithfully followed every month. Having accomplished our mission with treasure in hand we handed the merchant coins from our allowances, earnings from yard mowing or other chores and even turning in pop bottles for cash deposits. We hurried home to read our new books. Sometimes afterwards we’s pull out our collection and trade with each other. Fun times!
Marvel’s Greatest Covers #3 brought to you by the likes of Jack Kirby, John Buscema, Gene Colon, Jim Steranko, John Romita, Wally Wood, Bill Everette, Joe Sinnott, Frank Giacoia, Don Heck, Vince Colletta, Steve Ditko, Chic Stone, Paul Reinman, Dick Ayers, Gil Kane, John Severin, Maria Severin, Herb Trimpe, Jay Gavin, George Tuska, Neal Adams and probably a name or 2 we could not remember. And let’s not forget the writers and editor contributions from Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Arnold Drake and Roy Thomas gave us the Marvel Age of Comics!

We are just spotlighting what we’ve done here.

Project: New Man 1 Page 7
Okay last page of the set-up! Dave Davison A.K.A. New Man on a hunch and the info he gathered from a newspaper article has ventured out to a local mall in the bustling city of New Harbor. As fate would have it, New Man spots a potential perp almost immediately. But fate will be terribly cruel this day as Dave will soon learn.
Mark’s Remarks: I know I did some tones on this book, but I look at it now and some of the toning may have been done by someone else. Freazie might remember. I do remember doing some inking assists and art corrections. I recall having a lot of fun first penciling these pages and later getting to work on the production aspects of putting together the comic. The job can be tedious at times but rewarding none the less.
Any questions or comments? All are welcome.

Humants 1 Page 7
A somber scene… which is a prelude to the drama to come!
Mark’s Remarks: Very nice effects on this page, if i do say so myself! ? One of my favorites in this issue. Freazie never got much credit but he did some great storytelling with his pencils! He’s gonna do some more real soon, he tells me!
The Zipatone works better here! Allan Lewis and myself get credit for the tones on this one. I think we got it a bit better balanced here. Some pages we overdid with halftones and the art lost some of it’s contrast. I think contrast is a very important part of comic art whether it’s a color or black and white book.
Any questions or comments? All are welcome.
