NFL Conference Championships • M.M.M.S. Wants You

Friday, January 18th, 2019

Welcome to Friday’s Mega Comics Group Updates!

Well, the NFL Playoffs have concluded and the Conference Championships Set.

Fresh out of the College Football Playoffs we jumped right into the NFL Playoffs. This year we have seen some tremendous, high scoring, high octane offense from various teams such as the the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs, the New Orleans Saints, the L.A. Chargers and the L.A. Rams to mention a few. During the playoffs all that practically went out the window as the defenses took over! All those teams above, except the Chargers, have made it to the the Conference Championships to be played this weekend.  So this is the weekend we will find out who makes it to the Super Bowl! Who will it be?

Patriots and Patriots fans celebrate another shot at a Conference Championship and the possibility of capturing their 6th Super Bowl title.

The M.M.M.S. Remembered!

(Edited and revised from the original post of Friday, February 13th, 2009)

MMMS Wants You!

Surprise! We were surfing the web and ran across a bunch of old Marvel stuff we really got a kick out of! Some us around here are not quite old enough to remember this first hand. Heck, it was like 1964! We found a clip several weeks ago of the Merry Marvel Marching Society’s theme song which we posted. But legend had it there was a lot more than just the song on that famous record and we found it on You Tube! Actually someone put a bunch of photos in a slide show and dubbed in the audio. It’s pretty cool!! Give a look and listen: (Quick Tip: If the video is not showing, hit refresh on your browser.)

MMMS Kit

Okay, now for a little history lesson on the MMMS courtesy of Wikipedia:

Merry Marvel Marching Society (often referred to by the abbreviation “M.M.M.S.”) was a fan club for Marvel Comics started by Marvel editor Stan Lee and/or Marvel publisher Martin Goodman in 1964.

Creation: Following teaser promotion in Marvel comic books cover-dated November 1964, Marvel Comics introduced the company’s in-house fan club, the Merry Marvel Marching Society, in its February 1965 comics, released in the fall of 1964. Generally abbreviated as “the M.M.M.S”. the club offered readers a $1 membership kit that initially included a welcoming letter; a membership card; a one-sided, 33 1/3 rpm record, “The Voices of Marvel”; a scratch pad; a sticker; a pinback button; and a certificate. The company offered permutations of this kit, plus additional promotional merchandise such as posters and sweatshirts, through comics cover-dated October 1969.

MMMS Record

As author Ronin Ro described: “Stan made up cards and had production people Sol Brodsky and Marie Severin help create a pin, eight stickers prominently featuring the heroes, ‘a nutty new notepad,’ a mini-book, a pencil, a certificate, and a membership card. Stan wanted his bullpento join him in a special recording he’d include in the $1 membership kit. Most of the bullpen was willing, except for Steve Ditko.”

Demise: The M.M.M.S. was absorbed into the subsequent Marvel fan club, Marvelmania International, in 1969. This second club lasted until 1971. A third official Marvel Comics fan club, FOOM(Friends of ‘Ol Marvel) followed from 1973 to 1976.

Ranks: The ranks of M.M.M.S. membership, all identified by three letter abbreviations (such as Q.N.S. for “Quite ‘Nuff Sayer” to F.F.F. for “Fearless Front-Facer”) were invented by young comics fan, and Jack Kirby-confidante Mark Evanier.

The society was a great success, with “Fabulous” Flo Steinberg remarking that they “were working seven days a week just opening these envelopes” (containing the subscription fee). Soon, the club offered a range of other money-spinning products, including: “a six-foot “life-size, full-color Spidey pin-up” made from a striking Ditko Spider-Man drawing, a $1.50 T-shirt with a sinister-looking Ditko-drawn Dr. Strange, a Thing drawing by Jack Kirby on “Official Swinging’ Stationary,” and a Jack-drawn Fantastic Four family portrait T-shirt.”

Okay, now let’s take a look at some comics from the Mega Comics Group!…

MCG Turns Ten!

Project: NewMan #3 AND the Humants #3 will both be available soon from our  Comics Store and the fine folks at IndyPlanet and DriveThru Comics.

MCG Turns Ten!From our Web Archives enjoy the first postings of Project: NewMan and Humants exactly as they were 10 years back in June 2008. Therefore, keep in mind as you read, back in the day, we were posting a page everyday whereas this blog now updates weekly. So when you read any references to “tomorrow” just know, that was then and this is now.

The next installment from 2008 will be posted next Friday. But you don’t have to wait, just keep reading. All the pages are there.

Better yet, for an even more awesome comics reading experience, go to our Comics Store and purchase the PDF for a measly buck! You can read the pdf right in your browser and it is not nearly as limited as reading it on the web page! In addition to that, you can download the pdf to your computer or iDevice to read it whenever and wherever you like even if you don’t have an internet connection. So much you can do…

Project: New Man 1 Page 4

Originally this book was to be inked by one inker but some problems came up that did not allow the originally slated inker to do the job. This posed a big problem but then we met Thomas and Nathan who came in and saved the book, with a little assist from Mark and Allan!

Dave has decided on a course of action regarding the Mall Serial Killer he just read about in the paper. Meanwhile, Dawn and John continue the debate on how to best divide up research and training for Dave.

Mark's Profile PicMark’s Remarks: I don’t remember now what inspired this story, it’s been 18 years or so. At the time there may have been one or two mass public shootings like ”The Mall Massacres”, but since then there have been many “Columbine”type tragedies. It’s a shame we can’t come up with a solution as easily as we forecast such horrors these days.

Humants 1 Page 4

Ouch! Bet that leaves a mark! ? Sure it’s a tired old cliche but there really is more to  Devlin Delano than meets the eye it would appear. So if he’s not the villain, as we  said last week, he is doing a fair job of standing in until one shows up. ?

Mark’s Remarks: Okay, it’s way past midnight this time around. As much as I tried to get this one done early other things just kept coming up and getting in the way. Good thing I have regular insomnia or I couldn’t do this late night gig!

Mark's Profile PicI mentioned Al Lewis was the inker on this first Humants tale. This is one of my favorite pages of this issue. Of course Freazie had it all penciled very much like what you see here. But when Allan got hold of it, as was his custom with just about everything he worked on, he added a lot of detail to it. I don’t remember how much of the background was Freazie’s but I do remember being blown away by the detail Al added. It still effects me that way every time I look at it.

Any questions or comments? All are welcome.
