WOW! I just got a package from my pal Freazie! Look what it has in it! These are pages from the Project: New Man story that would have been published in Humants #3. That’s right these have never been published before! I think you will agree these are way to good too let gather dust any more! So here’s the very first publishing of two dynamic pages penciled by a great talent named Christopher Torres.

I never had any personal contact with the fella but I got the honor to ink these pages! It was a real blast putting ink to graphite lines! Chris penciled really tight so it was a breeze and a joy to ink these pages! This again was the early 1990’s. The likes of Jim Lee and Rob Liefield were taking the industry by storm at Marvel and Image Comics was but a mere shade of a concept somewhere in their collective consciousness! A lot of guys started imitating those young talents and Chris was one of them and better at it than most. But maybe I’m bias. What do you think? You’ll see Mr. Torres pages in about 50 days! Chris’s work begins with Chapter 6 of the Project: New Man storyline entitled The Haunted Man.

Here’s something else I had forgotten. Freazie found these and sent them along with the pages to Humants #3. These pages were pencils of New Man for a subplot in Humants #5. Freazie is looking around for the rest of that issue now, the last we worked on before disbanding Legacy Comics.

Memory is foggy at best but I think this was a tie in for the new Project: New Man title we were planning to release. Yes, we were planning on splitting the books up again. At this point we had tried just about everything. We did free previews for retailers, comic strips for Comics Buyers Guide, re-designing the cover logos, and even trying to imitate Jim Lee and Rob Liefield, as you can see here. But in the end the money ran out and we had no where to turn. As hard as it was we had to move on. Freazie tried briefly after I had to stop but he couldn’t go much further either. But it seems we’re not finished yet, eh?

Maybe I can show you the other two pages from this sub-plot tomorrow. Gotta do some other work now! See ya!

Nathan Massengill helped us out a lot in those early days! I think he was just out of Joe Kuburt’s School or maybe he was still in there. Hey! Some of this stuff he did for Legacy Comics could have been his homework for all I know! This one was going in either the New Project: New Man series or maybe Humants # 3 I’m not sure. Since it stands on it’s own and one of my favorites I thought I’d show it off here. Don’t forget, you can click on the image to see a larger view of the art.

Today Humants #3 begins! This is exciting for us because we have had to wait a long time for this issue to get published. After 16 years, the wait is over! It may not be in the old school printed format yet, but we have it in the new school digital format for the whole World Wide Web to see!

This issue features the debut of the Savage Chaosta! Ain’t she a doll! I don’t think The Herald it too thrilled with her arrival! Our little band of heroes will never be the same again!

I, Mark Poe, did the layout for this cover and Freazie White, Jr. finished it and did a color guide for it. I used the color guide and added the color in PhotoShop.

In Project New Man # 3: Dave Davison, A.K.A. New Man is still in his jogging outfit in case you just came back from vacation and wondered where his uniform is.

It looks like New Man is pressing the advantage against his larger opponent Cyber-Tech, but then the tide turns… or does it

Here’s the inside front cover for Humants #3, as it was originally designed in 1992, but now all the text has been brought up to date for this site. I did the art of The Herald attacking Chaosta. It was my first attempt at mimicking the fan fave’s Jim Lee, Rob Liefield and the other soon to be founders of Image Comics artists who in turn we’re mimicking Arthur Adams. The reason for my imitating the art styles as well as creating the new Humant’s logo was to try to be more appealing to the distributors and retailers.

There was another reason for my imitating the Image guys: During a conversation Freazie and I had, he made the comment, innocently enough, that my style was not really hot, fan fave material. I was chiefly inspired by John Byrne and Jack Kirby, but they were not the current “hot” artists at the time, so after getting over the initial offense, I decided Freazie was right, as he often was and still is. So I went about studying the Image guys and Adams and trying to adapt a lot of their style to my own.

In Project New Man # 3: Cyber-Tech in his battle with New Man has been partially disabled, but he’s not down for the count yet! The clearly insane cyborg has transferred all his anger and hatred to Dave.

Wondering what’s happened to The Thunder Hawks? Don’t fret, they have not abandoned our hero as you will see on tomorrow’s page.

I think Christopher really did a nice job with these action/battle scenes! What do you think?

Humants #3: Omni Spawn meets with Janeta Rosebud and as a result, The Savage Chaosta makes her Humants debut!

Freazie White, Jr. once again does his usual great job penciling and scripting this issue. He had a plethora of inkers helping out with the art. Ralph Ellis Miley, who was one of our fraternity brothers from Alpha Omega, did lend a hand and brush. He’s someone you may see more work from in the coming months on other projects. Billy Leavell, while doing his usual legendary lettering, also assisted with some inking on a few pages as well. Freazie and I, Mark Poe, both did  a little inking as usual. I think Christopher Torres may have helped out on some of the backgrounds also, now that I look through the pages. I will have to check on that and add him to the credits if he did. In spite of all the helping hands this issue’s art actually comes off looking very uniform, that is, the style of art is consistent throughout the issue.

One last note on this page: That background with the wall of graffiti behind Omnispawn and Janeta, if my memory is correct, I did while we were sitting at the tables of one of the conventions we were guests with. I think some of the fans attending got their names enshrined on it!

Project New Man # 3: continues the epic battle between Cyber-Tech and New Man! Dave looks like he’s starting to lose ground to the fury of the mad cyborgs attack! But the battle isn’t over yet, The Thunder Hawks may be the cavalry charging to Dave’s rescue in this one! They will try anyway!

Tomorrow we’ll find out some more revelations concerning Cyber-Tech and his origin which will show he has strong ties to… Ah, let’s wait until then to find out. I don’t want to spoil the plot for you.

Right now in Humants #3: Page 2 is a great splash page Freazie did of Chaosta immediately after her empowerment through Khosmotic Renewal by Omnispawn.

This is another page I inked on our convention tour in the summer of 1991. I actually started it at Freazies house. Since we live several states apart, I had made the long drive up to Michigan and had the privilege of living with Freazie and his wife, Angela and the kids for about 6 weeks while we trekked all over the Northeastern States to one convention after another. We had some good times then! We did a lot of art, a lot of plotting and logged a lot of miles on my ol’ beat up ‘85 Chevy Cavalier!

And over in Project New Man # 3: When things look like they are darkest, that’s often when something happens to turn the tide. He’s heard that kind of thing all his life. At one time David “Killer” Kane would have mocked the chances of miraculous last minute saves. More likely, he would have acknowledged, if anything could go wrong it would! His Special Forces training in ‘Nam, allowed him to only trust in his own abilities and training, never on any one else and certainly not in anything remotely resembling hope or faith. But that was before David “Killer” Kane was transformed into New Man. Since that time he has lived in a state of amazing events he would never imagined in his wildest dreams!

Okay, I know I said today, but it’s really tomorrow we’ll find out some more revelations concerning Cyber-Tech and his origin which will show he has strong ties to… but that’s for tomorrow’s update. For real this time! Really. Sorry I jumped the gun yesterday.

Project New Man # 3: So the battle between New Man and the Thunder Hawks with Cyber-Tech is over, and the mad cyborg is subdued thanks to the inventiveness of Emmanual Reyes, a.k.a. Bearcat, and Thomas “Tom Thumb” McBride, along with the resourcefulness of Jonathan Thunderstorm.

Ah, but that’s not the end of the story. Now we have learned some interesting clues to where the tech for the cyborg came from. It’s a link that will eventually have the paths of New Man and the Thunder Hawks cross with that of Omnispawn and the Humants! Check out today’s update to see what I’m talking about.

Humants #3: We met Janeta Rosebud last issue and right off the bat I’m sure you saw the same thing I did. She’s a bit of a rebel! But having met her Dad and sister last issue as well, it’s not hard to see why. Nothing is harder on the rebel than having a strong father who really cares for her, albeit with some selfish motives of his own, and tries to shelter her. In turn the father’s attitude just fuels her ambition to get out on her own and prove herself, to be as strong, as independent and in short to be just like the authority she’s rebelling against! Talk about a paradox!

So, okay, here we have little happy, go, lucky Janeta, the rebel, wanting desperately to have the power to stand up and prove herself, and suddenly, un-expectantly she has more than she ever dreamed possible! Whew! Hang on, folks, this could be a wild ride!

Project New Man # 3:

Today’s page is the last of this chapter of The Haunted Man. Dave and the Thunder Hawks ponder Cyber-Tech’s links to Ebeneezer Baal and Devlin Robotics. It’s beginning to look like there is much more to this than New Man just tracking a clever crime lord.

We have a couple special pages and the back covers coming up then next week on to Project: New Man #4!

Humants #3:

Janeta Rosebud muses over the transformation she has experienced as she searches for the other Humants, who she has been told by Omnispawn to join up with.

In her efforts she is distracted and not being used to having super powers…well, hurry on over and check it out to see what happens to our newest Humant.

Well, we did not get as much done over the weekend as we had hoped. There were some things which came up that were not in the plan. So we adjust and move on. Hope yours went easier! But it’s a new week and so we begin again!

We may have to take off another weekend or 2 to get caught up. MCG usually updates 7 days a week, even though most other web comics only update 5 or 6 days every week. There is a lot of work in the background to maintain the sites and keep the new pages coming out regularly. We would like your comments on the frequency of the strip. Project New Man # 3:

Here’s a single page adventure Nathan Massengill did for us back in the day. I showed a smaller version of this in on eof the earlier MCG Blogs. I don’t know what inspired it, but I’ve always liked this page showing our hero in a liesure setting. After what he just went through with Cyber-Tech that’s a big switch, and since I know what he’s about to go through it’s a small reprieve, to say the least. So let’s enjoy it while we can!

Of course this is not part of The Haunted Man story line but we had a couple extra slots to fill on this issue and I wanted you to see the larger size version of this page.

We have a special page for Christopher Torres pencils on slate for tomorrow, so don’t go away, it’s sure to be a nice treat as well! Then I’ll show you the inside back cover with a peek at next issue’s cover, also by Mr. Torres, and then the colorful back cover by our own Allan Lewis. Next Monday we’ll begin Project: New Man #4. I can hardly wait!

Humants #3:

Ah, now let us leave our newest Humant, Chaosta, and check in on those she searches so diligently for. We find them in a Renovated Warehouse which Magistar had managed to rent after pooling the three Khosmotic Warriors’ resources. They discussed doing this in Humants # 2. Remember?

Freazie did some nice one-on-one shots of Man Ark sparring with Sojourner here and we get a nice little bit of exposition on Sojourner’s origin. Now we know the reason for his name. I think Freazie did some nice dialogue here as well as some great pencils!

I think this is mostly Ralph’s and Christopher’ inks with a little background from me on 1 or 2 panels.
