Humants Are Here!

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Humants 1 Cover

The New Mega Comics Group web site is almost a month old. For almost a month we have been re-presenting the Legacy Comics Black & White Independent title Project: New Man originally published in 1991. Now we have for your reading and viewing pleasure the first isssue of Project: New Man’s sister book Humants! Freazie and I are really excited at the prospects of bringing these titles out of mothballs and publishing them in a larger market than they have ever been in, the World Wide Web. We hope you will enjoy your daily dose of Humants and will take the opportunity to let us know what you think of the book and this site overall. Your feedback will determine where we go from here. So fire up those keyboards and let us have it! ;-)

Also don’t forget to browse the Mighty Mega Comics Group Checklist to see what else we have up our sleeves for the near future.

Check out the cover for Humants number one, penciled by Freazie White, Jr., inked by me, Mark Poe and colored by none other than Nathan Massengill! :-) Yes, THAT Nathan Massengill!

Enjoy!

The Legend of Legacy Comics Business/Trading Card

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Legacy Biz Card FrontReally it was just going to be a business card but we wanted it to jump, to grab the attention of anyone who saw it! It did! When we went on our marathon 18 Convention Tour in the Summer of ‘92 most thought it was a trading card. We gave a way hundreds of them! It’s not as effective here but use your imagination. It was a folding card. On the front it said: “Comics With…” and then you opened it to fold out double the size of a regular business card with a graphic of one of our characters, Blaze The Mediator, with the word: “…Power!” below him.

Legacy Biz Card Inside

Which, of course was, all together now, “Comics with Power!” Then on the back was a Kirby like machine motif with our names, numbers, address and such.

Legacy Biz Card Back

I think we could have sold these and paid for our trip! Hindsight… ;-)

The Quantum Mechanics Sketch

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Quantum Mechanics SketchSo what have we done lately? Well, as I wrote elsewhere, Freazie and I may have had to go back to regular jobs after Legacy Comics had to shut down but we did not stop making plans and creating new story lines. I’ve got a whole notebook of projects. Here’s one I’ve been working on: The Quantum Mechanics! This is a cover sketch for the first issue. It won’t be making the scene until next year but I thought I would tease you a little with this sketch. You can see what my current art looks like. It’s the super team family theme tribute to such classics as the original Fantastic Four but you will find it can stand on it’s own. Hang around until 2009 and you’ll see what I’m hinting at. Want to see a bigger view of the sketch? Just click on the image.

Have a nice Sunday!

Living On The Razor’s Edge

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Here’s one for the ages… This I ran across while sorting through the considerable pile of artwork from theRazor's Edge concept art Legacy Comics Archives. Here we have the original concept art for Razor’s Edge, the one that got me and Freazie together as a creative team way by in 1985. I don’t remember now how many chapters of Razor’s Edge we turned out for Alpha-Omega, the APA we worked with at the time but it was several. Maybe I will run across the story art in the archives. Who knows? We might bring these guys back too someday. What say, Freazie?

Relax, it’s Tuesday!

Blast From The Past 1-Nathan Massengill’s New Man

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Nathan New Man SketchBack in the day, Nathan Massengill did a couple preliminary cover sketches, one for New Man and one for Humants. I don’t remember which issue these were done for. I had forgotten about them until I ran across them while scanning story pages.  I keep running across items I’ve forgotten! Seems we did a lot more than I remember doing! :-D

Nathan and a lot of others folks were excited about what we were trying to do with Legacy Comics and their enthusiasm showed in the work they did. Neither Freazie nor I will ever be able to show how thankful we are for the help and passion all these fine folks put into our characters and stories.

Hey! It’s Wednesday! Halfway there! ;-)

Blast From The Past 2-Nathan Massengill’s Humants

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Nathan's Humants SketchAs you recall Wednesday, I detailed the origin of this sketch from Nathan Massengill. I showed you the New Man Sketch so here now is the Humants cover sketch he did. These were prelims for painted covers Nathan was to do. I don’t remember now why he did not go farther with them. At that time Nathan was more into the painting than the inking and he had some awesome results with that as the colors covers of Project: New Man #1 and Humants #1 shows. I really enjoyed Nathans inks on our first book and would have like to have had him do much more of both inking and painting for Legacy Comics. Maybe someday…

Back in the early 90’s painting for comics was the exception, now of course whole comic book stories in paintings have become common in the industry. The advancement of computer programs like Adobe Photo Shop have greatly aided speeding up production in this area. Personally I like the painted comics, especially those by Alex Ross. Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but there is something about traditionally penciled and inked books that just appeal more to me. If adding paint colors and FX in Photo Shop are available that’s always a plus. Sometimes it may be too much and actually take away from the point of comics which is storytelling.

As we get into the new stories on this site we plan to do at least some of those in color as time and budget allows.

Also as time allows in this blog I hope to get into some more detailed articles about comics. If you have suggestions or comments please post them.

Hey! We made it! It’s Friday!!

The Last Project: New Man Pages 2

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Humants 5 Pg18 New Man Pencils

To the best of my recollection the sub-plot for these three pages had to do with current The Haunted Man story line. Dave (New Man) Davison had just learned of Fawn Wilfred’s capture by the mysterious Ebenezer Baal. So he was taking out his rage at that fact, and not knowing where to find her, on some gym equipment as members of the Thunder Hawks look on.Of course this means we never finished The Haunted Man story line.

Humants 5 Pg19 New Man Pencils

I don’t know the future of these characters after we finish the web publishing of all we did of the Legacy Comics characters which was somewhere over 200 pages. I hope Freazie and I can at least tie up the loose ends for both series on this web site. Let us know what you think. We’d love to see your thoughts in the comments section.

If you want a larger view of these pages just click these images.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Nathan’s New Man Mini Adventure

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Nathan's New Man 1 Page Adventure

Nathan Massengill helped us out a lot in those early days! I think he was just out of Joe Kuburt’s School or maybe he was still in there. Hey! Some of this stuff he did for Legacy Comics could have been his homework for all I know! This one was going in either the New Project: New Man series or maybe Humants # 3 I’m not sure. Since it stands on it’s own and one of my favorites I thought I’d show it off here. Don’t forget, you can click on the image to see a larger view of the art.

Enjoy your Thursday!

1992 Canton Ohio Convention

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Convention Jubilee Canton FlyerHope you have been enjoying our little Khosmotic Conjunction 2012 A.D. Primer this week showing one of the new titles we are working on for this fall.

Here’s something I ran across from the summer of 1992 when we made an 18 Stop Comics Convention Tour all over the eastern U.S. from New Jersey to Ohio to Georgia and lots of states in between. We had a great time and met a lot of wonderful fans, convention promoters, retailers and talent both established pros and beginners.

As you can see this one featured Mike Zeck and Phil Zimelman two Marvel giants from the 80’s and 90’s. Two of the nicest guys we ever met. Of course, even though we were suppose to be at our booth we did take turns when our corner was slow, one of us would go make out like a fan boy buying books, and signed prints with the usual starstruck look meeting some of our favorite artists and writers. We got to share a table next to Marshall Rogers at one con and even gave him a lift to the airport after the convention was over. He was most gracious and never complained once at being cramped in the back seat of my old beat up ‘85 Chevy Cavelier! To say we had fun is an understatement, Freazie and I were walking out a dream!

Don’t forget to click the image to see a larger view.

Be sure to check out Saturday’s Project: New Man and Humants’ posts.

Humants # 2 Solicitation 1991

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Humants #2 Solicitation FlyerWe are finishing up the first Humants story from issue #1 today so it is appropriate to show you this ad flier we sent out to distributors back in 1991 for Issue # 2. It shows the cover and some teaser info for that issue. Again Project: New Man was the back up feature and you can see what was originally to be the back cover in the lower right corner. We changed that cover for one by Thomas O’Conner before it went to press. I’m not sure where that original cover is but I’m trying to locate it. This was a re-solicitation, we missed our deadline for the first one and had to reschedule. That’s always a big mistake with Diamond Distributors and the others that were still around then.

On another subject: I would just like to thank everyone out there for visiting and supporting this site and our two regular comic features. We have been promoting MCG.com through ads with Project Wonderful and in just a little less than 2 months we’ve gotten about 10,000 visitors. I don’t know if that’s great as for as other web comics go but it really warms our hearts! We plan to keep adding content, doing our best to entertain you with our comics and earn your time to keep coming back! We’ve heard from some of you but we’d love to hear from more! Some don’t want to leave comments on pages but had rather use an eform or email, so we are going to set that up very soon. We’ll be adding to the promised Character Guides and lots more so stay tuned. Again…THANKS!

Don’t forget to click the image to see a larger view.

Be sure to check out Sunday’s comic book posts for Project: New Man and Humants’! Have a great day!

Humants Free Preview 1 page 1

Humants 2 Cover

As I wrote yesterday, at the print shop I work for on my Day Job we are in the midst of doing High School Football Program Books of 75-150 pages each. Time is a premium for the next few weeks so I will have to keep it short.

On top of that we had the funeral of my Wife’s Grandmother yesterday. She was 85 and had a very good life. She was also our next door neighbor and will be missed greatly.  She was one of the nicest people I ever met and I never heard her say a bad word of any one. She always had an encouraging word for whoever she met. I knew her for more than 25 years.

Here’s page 1 of the Free Preview of Humants we passed out in the conventions and gave to retailers I showed you the cover of yesterday.

Today we have the debut of Humants #2. This issue was a landmark issue in my opinion. I thought Freazie and I turned in some of the best work we had done since our small press days. We learned a few things from the publication of the first two books with Legacy Comics and applied them to this issue.

This cover I did the pencils and inks on and Nathan Massengill did his usual extraordinary job of painting it in blazing color! Remember to click the images to see a larger views.

Be sure to check out Wednesday’s comic book posts for Project: New Man and Humants’! Enjoy life! CU2morrow ;-)
