Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Welcome to Monday’s mirthful, madcap, mania, which is the Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

MCG at the Facebook Comics Convention

And welcome back to us!  🙂 Back from our sabbatical but running a little late this Monday morning. We have a lot to fill you in on but we’ll be brief this morning  since time is short and save the main “catch up” for tomorrow!

As we reported a few weeks ago, Facebook Comic Convention is an unofficial virtual comics, animation and media convention bringing together the robust community of industry professionals and fans registered on Facebook. The Facebook Comic Con is a project now under construction, preparing for a grand gala premiere celebration on the weekend of March 12-15, 2009.

Lot’s of stuff is going on even now before the official kick off dates listed above. So head on over and browse the guest tables and exhibits. Online, virtual, conventions have been tried in the past but this one on Facebook promises to be different. It’s the first, to our knowledge, to be hosted on a Social Networking site. Or has someone tried this on MySpace? If you know drop us a comment, we’d love to know! Regardless, this one promises to make history and is already causing quite a stir all over the comics industry! Michael Netzer, formerly known as Mike Nasser, is your host and the founder of the event. Mike produced some awesome work back in the 70’s and 90’s for Marvel and DC and is no slouch when it comes to quality artwork either! He did the art for the Facebook Comics Con Poster/Header seen above. Folks, do you  really want to miss this? No, we didn’t think so. CU there!

Mega Tales will be debuting the last week of this month. We decided to push it back just a bit so we could have a little more time to remaster this 1987 tale with full color and as it turns out all new lettering.

Any questions or comments? All are welcome.

MORE ON THE FACEBOOK COMICS CON! Tuesday’s Update

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

MCG At The FB Comic ConWelcome to Tuesday’s tuned in, turned on, tech savvy, Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

More on the Facebook Comic Con!  🙂 Yesterday we told you about our newly set up table at the virtual comics convention on Facebook which of course can only be attended by going to Facebook.com. If you are not a member yet it’s high time you got in the game! You don’t have to be a member to see our group page or some of the FB Comic Con pages but if you want to get the most our of the experience it’s a good idea to join up. It’s free and you’ll thank us later. 😉 Seriously, our fearless publisher, Mark Poe, was one of the last people who would have been interested in a Social Network but at the prompting of a fellow cartoonist he joined up. Much to his surprise he found a lot of his old school mates and even family members on FB. Some of these folks he had not seen in years! So in addition to a lot of fun features, like the online comics convention, Facebook helps you keep up with friends and family. But take warning! It can be addictive! 😉

Nathan MassengillWe also told you about the star studded guest list for the FB Comic Con featuring the likes of Stan Lee, Michael Netzer a.k.a. Mike Nasser, Ashraf Ghori, Dave Simons, Don McGregor, Elliot S. Maggin, Gail Simone, Gerry Alanguilan, James Hundall, Janet L. Hetherington, Jon F. Merz, Josef Rubinstein, Len Wein,  & Tony DeZuniga! But that’s just the start! Our own Mega Bullpen has it’s stars there as well! Not only will Mark Poe be on hand but you will find Nathan Massengill, who contributed mightily to the very first issue of Project: New Man #1 as well.  We hope we can talk shy, Freazie White, Jr., creator, writer, artist and editor of Humants, as if we needed to remind you, and Thomas O’Connor, another Project: New Man # 1 seasoned veteran, to making appearances as well! Billy Leavell, ace Legacy Comics letterer extraordinaire, is also a Facebook member so we may be able to lure him in as well. Keep your fingers crossed!

eoct2But wait! There’s more! You will also find several of the comics creators we’ve had feature articles on right here on the MCG Daily Comics Blog! If you remember from way back in August we did an article on Jay Piscopo, the creator, writer and artist of the  Capt’n Eli’s Adventures! Jay has a plethora of ideas in addition to his web comics and graphic novels available at captneli.com and a lot of new material yet to be published. A lot this new material he is giving us a sneak peek at the FB Comic Con. Don’t miss out on the mystery of Hiro Loste and The Lost Heroes! Jay clues you in at the special Hiro Loste Appreciation Group.

FACEBOOK COMICS CON GALA GRAND OPENING! DAY 1 REPORT! Friday’s Update

Friday, March 13th, 2009

MCG at the Facebook Comics ConventionWelcome to Friday’s fabulous, fun filled, festivities which are the Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Facebook Comics Con Day 1FRIIIIIIDAY!  🙂 The weekend is upon us and in case you didn’t know, it’s virtual party time at the Facebook Comic Con! Yesterday the Gala Grand Opening festivities began in full swing with a Michael Netzer delivering an inspiring and rousing speech outlining what exactly the FB Comic Con is all about, how it came about and how it will continue. This is the kickoff weekend when we celebrate this new phenomena and next evolutionary step in Comic Book Conventions! To paraphrase Michael, this is only the beginning! Whereas with a regular convention we spend a few days together having fun walking the floors, checking out the tables and exhibits and costumes and then pulling up stakes and everyone going home this convention will not end Sunday afternoon. The Kickoff Festivities and main events will, but the Group Pages or “tables” will remain open and the convention will go on throughout the Spring, Summer and the remainder of the year and possibly years into infinity or however long Facebook endures! 😉

It is to be noted that Virtual Comic Conventions have been tried before and not been very successful, but on a Social Network like Facebook the possibilities are literally endless! If you have not signed up yet, and why would you not, it’s all FREE, you are missing the event of the year! If you are one of those shrinking violets who doesn’t like to go out much this is made to order for you! All you need is a computer, internet connection and BAM! You’re there, yet still somewhat anonymously as only the World Wide Web can provide! It’s a win, win!

What convention would be complete without photos? And we have some in our own MCG Photo Viewer! So how do you take photos in a virtual convention? Simple, with screen capture shots. It’s your snapshot camera on your computer. So here’s several Day 1 Convention Pics starting with some from Michael Netzer’s keynote address and ending with him toasting the event. Enjoy!

POST FACEBOOK COMICS CON PREMIER REPORT! Monday’s Update

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Welcome to Monday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Firestar Costme Winner

Facebook Comics Convention

Whew! What a weekend! 🙂 Yes, We are a bit late due to all the events over the weekend. Sorry! 🙁

It was a great success! We’re talking about the First ever Facebook Comic Con! There have been attempts at online conventions before but none this successful and none we know of on a social network. The good news is even though the Premier Party is over as of yesterday, the FB Comic Con is ongoing, so if you missed the kickoff party you can still get in on the convention because unlike regular conventions THIS ONE NEVER ENDS! This one is actually still being built and because it is virtual and online it is 24/7/365! What we saw officially starting this weekend was history in the making! It’s one of those milestones we’ll look back on with fond memories and tell our grandchildren about some day and have others ask, “Were you there when it started?” Yeah, that kind of thing.

So what exactly happened at Facebook Comic Convention Gala Premier? Glad you asked! 😉 It was tough for some of us to wrap our minds around an event like this because it’s something totally new. It is a virtual convention, but just because you can’t attend at a convention center or some building doesn’t make it any less real. Virtual, yes, but virtual does not mean “not real”. This was a very real convention and still is! There was a real costume contest, real tables or pages if you prefer. There were real, live question and answer sessions with such people as William Katt, the actor/director most famous for his role in the ’80’s TV series, The Greatest American Hero. There were real art contests and exhibits. There were real portfolios on display for real professionals to view and critique. There was real interaction from person to person. Mark Poe says he logged over 50 comment responses in the space of a few hours Sunday afternoon. See our MCG Photo Viewer for some images.

MCG at the Facebook Comics ConventionSo what does it all mean? Well, folks we have seen the future and it is now! We are in the 21st Century and the Digital Age is blossoming! This is not just the shape of things to come this is what is happening today. We have arrived at the Future we all so longed far.

Does this mean regular conventions will be obsolete? Of course not! They exist side by side just like Newspapers and the Internet News have done, but one will begin to diminish at some point and guess which one it will be! Newspapers are steadily losing ground to web based news sources and they are perhaps the first casualty of the Digital Age, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Print media and the web will thrive side by side, for those who know how to utilize the 2 one complimenting the other. Print On Demand will thrive and even better printers for home use and better formats to output directly to those home printers without compromising Intellectual Property Rights are just around the corner! the future is here, let’s embrace it not run from it!

DAVE SIMONS! TESS! FACEBOOK COMIC CON ROLLS ON! Tuesday’s Update

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Dave StevensWelcome to Tuesday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Dave Simons is an inherently notable artist in comics history!  🙂 Dave Simons has been doing comics either inking or penciling or both for the better part of 4 decades! Most of his work has been at Marvel but he has also had some work for DC and some in the animation field as well. Dave has worked on one project or another for nearly every character in the Marvel Super-Hero Universe including Spider-man, Ghost Rider, and Conan to name a few. He has worked with Frank Miller, Rich Butler, Gene Colan and many other notable talents in comics. He has done a large body of work and done it very well. He may not be one of those names that is as recognizable as the ones above because he has always taken the back seat in assignments, being mainly an inker/embellisher and always more concerned with contributing to the team than in gaining notoriety for himself. More on his career in just a moment…

Dave & DaredevilRecently Dave was diagnosed with cancer and the prognosis has not been good. Having worked all his life amassing a large archive of art as his resume but never having garnered a lot of headlines or  generated a lot of royalties. Now, he finds himself struggling to make ends meet with the added cost of medical bills along with the normal day to day bills. The comics community has been finding out little by little because Dave has been keeping it all to himself never to be one to ask for a handout. NHaving learned of the ordeal, Comics Fans and Professionals are rallying to his aid to help a guy who has always helped others, in his time of need.

Dave participated in the big Gala Kickoff Celebration launching the Facebook Comic Con. Several sites have been set up for him and in his honor. Also his own personal web site and his new Wikipedia entry. In addition there are some auctions of his work and other notables who have contributed works to raise money to help ease Dave’s financial burden! The art at the below and to the right is one such piece by Dave himself being auctioned on eBay.

Now here’s a little more about Dave as promised above from his recently added Wikipedia entry by Daniel Best.

Dave Simons is an American comic book writer and artist. Simons has worked in comics since the 1970s and is well known for his work on Conan, Ghost Rider, Howard the Duck, Dracula, Forgotten Realms and more recently Courage the Cowardly Dog. He has worked with some of the giants in the field such as John Buscema, Bob Budiansky and Gene Colan.

Black Cat Sketch Trading Card

Early Years
Dave Simons grew up in New York and always wanted to be a comic book artist. “I always wanted to do comics since I was about eight years old,” Simons said, “so I started making a point of drawing something every day. I figured if I just kept doing that, then eventually I’d get better at it.” After a stint in the Coast Guard, and a chance series of meetings with Frank Robbins, Simons elected to undertake formal training to be an artist. As part of his education Simons attended the now legendary art workshops run by Marvel Comics artist John Buscema. It was while attending these classes that he became friends future comic book artists Ken Landgraf and Armando Gil. It was through Landgraf that Simons produced his first published work, which consisted of mainly commercial illustrations and the occasional soft-core pornographic comic book. Breaking away from Landgraf, Simons and Gil formed an alliance and friendship that continues to this day.

Marvel Career
Approaching then-Marvel editor Rick Marschall at a convention in the early 1980s, Simons was able to get his samples seen and assessed. At the time Marschall was overseeing the black and white magazine line for Marvel and Simons was duly assigned the duty of inking the first issue of the Howard the Duck magazine. After submitting the story Simons was assigned a fill-in Falcon story, which he inked with the assistance of Gil over Sal Buscemas pencils. This marked his first professional work for Marvel and in mainstream comic books.

Simons was then assigned both pencilling and inking jobs for Marvel. One of the artists who’s pencils he inked was Gene Colan. “Gene Colan was always my favorite penciler to work on,” says Simons today. “That was like a match made in heaven because a lot of people didn’t understand Gene’s shading. I thought ‘this is great, this is a great jumping on point if you’re gonna do black and white stuff’.” Simons attention to detail came into high demand in the 1980s and his inking credits include artists such as Keith Pollard, Ron Wilson, Frank Miller, John Buscema, Marc Silvestri, Greg LaRoque, John Romita Jr, Ed Hannigan, Walt Simsonson and more. Titles that featured his inking include Thor, The Thing, Marvel Premiere, Night Thrasher, Iron Man, King Conan, Dr Strange, Star Wars, Star Trek, Thundercats and others.

Team-Up Cover with Miller

Simons’s tenure at Marvel wasn’t limited to inking. He proved himself to be a very capable penciler and his pencils and ink combination were featured in titles such as the Spectacular Spider-Man, Team America, What If, Marvel Comics Presents, Bizarre Adventures, Red Sonja, Web Of Spider-Man, King Conan. He also provided cover art to titles such as Power Man & Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Darkhold, Machine Man, Kull The Conqueror, Marvel Team-Up, Marvel Two In One, Crystar, Moon Knight and many others. “Pencilling, if you’re doing it right,” said Simons, “is a much tougher gig than inking. Even though I usually liked to know what was going on, with inking you don’t necessarily have to be involved with the story. With pencilling you have to be intimately involved with the story because you’re the one who’s bringing the writers work and intentions across to the readers, as to what he’s trying to communicate there. You have to think of the drama, the camera angles, and the composition, make sure you leave room for the word balloons, all those sorts of things.”

Ghost Rider
Simons’s best known Marvel work was his run on the first series of Ghost Rider. His run on the title saw him first inking veteran artist Don Perlin before joining with Bob Budiansky to create one of the best remembered runs of the characters history. Budiansky and Simons worked with writers Roger Stern and J.M. DeMatteis. “The only speed bump we hit in this whole thing was when Simons, who of that team is the unsung hero, left,” Budiansky recalls. “He used to come to the office dressed in leather. I mean, this was not an act, he’d come dressed in one of these black leather, zipper jackets. I don’t know if he also wore leather pants. He might have worn them. But anyway, the point is, he knew how to ink leather, which was really important for Ghost Rider. So when he left the book we never really were able to replace that look that he gave the book. The rest of the team was all somewhat saddened by his departure.” Marvel attempted to duplicate the highly detailed and rendered look that Budiansky and Simons were able to give the character when the character was relaunched in the early 1990s but never quite succeeded.

Forgotten Realms 14 p6

DC Career
In the 1990s Simons left Marvel and crossed companies to DC. At DC he worked on titles such as Deathstroke The Terminator, Spelljammers, Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms, the latter he inked over Rags Morales’s pencils. “I liked the combination of me and Rags Morales,” says Simons, “He has that Frazetta thing going on and I was hip to that and tried to bring that out a lot.” Simons also worked on a number of cartoon based books during his time at DC and his work is featured in titles such as Cartoon Network Block Party. During this time he also illustrated Roger Rabbit at Disney.

Animation Career
In the late 1990s Simons left the comic book industry and moved into animation. As an artist he provided storyboards to such shows as Captain Planet, Exo-Squad Masters Of The Universe, Zula Patrol, Psi-Kix and Maya and Miguel. Recalls Simons, “The list of shows I’ve worked on is certainly longer than the list of comic books that I’ve worked on at this point.” Simons also directed the show Spy Dogs and worked again with Gil on this show, hiring him as a storyboard artist. Simons has the distinction of working on both an animated TV program and the comic book spin-off at the same time, this was when he worked on the animated show Courage The Cowardly Dog, which he subsequently drew the DC comic book of the same name.

Post Animation
Simons is known as a creator of characters. He has developed his own co-creation, Beastball Saga, with Sebastian Mondrone. He is also developing a new character, Donna Thyme, with writer Daniel Best.

Simons’s most recent work has been on the book Army Of Darkness, along with contributing art to various trading card sets issued by Rittenhouse. He has also contributed art to variant covers for series such as Red Sonja and the ‘100 Hulks’ project. Simons is also active with commissions.

Tess Back Cover B&W

Tomorrow we’ll have a Dave Simons Gallery. Now let’s finish up today with some Mega Comics!

Tess Cover Art Preview

Mega Tales # 1 is a couple of weeks from it’s web debut featuring Greg Legat’s character: Tess! That’s short for tesseract. The image you see to your left is a back cover Mark Poe did back in 1987.

If you don’t know what a tesseract is Wikipedia defines it as: In four dimensional geometry, the tesseract, also called an 8-cell or regular octachoron, is the four-dimensional analog of the cube, which is in turn the three dimensional analog of the square.

Below is another artifact from Wikipedia, a neat little gif animation released into the public domain by its author, Jason Hise which gives us a little better undersatanding of the concept…I think.

tesseract model animated

Anyway, Tess is a young lady who is a living tesseract. She comes from another dimension and in our dimension she can teleport herself or just about anything else, just about any where. She manifests the power in a number of ways other than teleportation and she has a cute little 4th dimensional dog named Nostradamus. The book was originally to be published by Dimension Graphics but unfortunately never saw print.

Greg Legat created and wrote Tess while Mark Poe, and J. Adam Walters did the art. The series for  the web will be in full color.

DAVE SIMONS TRIBUTES AT FACEBOOK COMICS CON! Monday’s Update

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Welcome to Monday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Yes, MCG has taken on a cause here with generating as much attention as possible to Dave Simons’ plight. 🙂 Why? For one, he deserves it! The man worked for the better part of 4 decades turning out top notch art for Marvel & DC Comics as well as animation projects and some independent projects as well. Now, he finds himself in dire straights battling cancer and complications thereof and he needs our help. So we are doing what we can to encourage Dave to fight on and support him in every way possible. We’ve been supplying links in our past several posts to sources of information and places you can donate or purchase art with proceeds going to help Dave. Let’s spotlight some of those in today’s post:

NOTLD:R Encore Presentation By Popular Demand
—————————————–
Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated ( NOTLD:R ), will be screening May 24th-30th, 2010 as part of the Facebook Comic-Con.

On May 24th, NOTLD:R will be uploaded directly to this event page. Those attending, will be able to view the entire feature length project for free from the comfort and convenience of their own homes.. This project will remain available until May 30th, at which time, it will be taken down thus ending the screening event.

(Note: It is recommended that anyone who has not seen the original ‘Night of the Living Dead’ watch it prior to seeing ‘Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated’. )

NOTLD:R
—————————————–
Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated a video based art show. Artists from around the world were invited to select scenes from the original film and make them their own. With no restrictions on style, media or process the resulting works ranged from oil paintings to comic illustrations and sock puppets to digital animation. These works were then curated into a visual track of artwork and set to the audio of George A. Romero’s masterpiece, ‘Night of the Living Dead’.

NOTLD:R is not meant to replace the original film but rather to supplement your viewing experience by allowing you to see the film through the eyes and hands of these talented individuals.

NOTLD:R News
—————————————–
NOTLD:R is a featured guest of the Facebook Comic-Con. At the Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated table (facebook group) you will be able to post comments, ask questions and interact with many of the international artists who contributed to this project.

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=95647949762

Real world screenings and events will also be posted off of that page. If there is not yet a screening or event scheduled for your area, have your local independent (or non-profit) theater, gallery, museum, or organization email screenings@notldr.com and we will work with them to arrange an event in your area.

Following this project, Neoflux Productions is turning a similar approach to creating animated/ illustrated visual tracks to be paired with old time horror radio dramas. With ‘Unseen Horror’ we will be turning the theater of the mind into a gallery. If you would be interested in participating email shenlon@hotmail.com for details.

Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated (Featured Screening of Fall Session of Facebook Comic Con) is currently up for a Rondo Hatton Award for Best Independent Production of 2009 (http://www.rondoaward.com/rondo/rondos.html ). The Rondo Hatton award is not selected by a jury of officials but instead it is turned to the court of public opinion. You, friends/ fans/ peers, are the jury so if you enjoyed the project, please cast your vote for us as well as your favorite horror websites, blogs, podcasts, magazines, and comics. Voting goes from now until April 3rd and winners will be announced on April 4th.

Archive's Spotlight

Archives Spotlight

We continue our look back at our previously posted web comics. We’ll be looking at all that’s come before with this feature and adding new comments as well. This month we are reviewing Project: New Man! Stay tuned to this section Monday, Wednesday and Fridays for more news on our archived titles.

Project: New Man 1 Page 25

Project: New Man #1 – Page 25 – Yes, it’s the big romantic scene where the hero gets close and intimate with the lady and they begin to express their true feelings for each other and he says those two words every female yearns to hear!

End of Chapter 4, but wait! There’s more…in our next installment.

Mark's Profile Pic 4Mark’s Remarks: Nathan’s inks are just awesome! For some reason I got to ink this page myself. I don’t recall why. I did a few other panels throughout the issue too. Nathan did do the last panel on this page. Nathan was not originally slated to ink these chapters, neither was Thomas O’Conner, they bailed us out at the last minute and fixed the pages someone else had barely started inking so we could meet our deadline.   As I’ve said, I can’t say enough about Nathan Massengill, as if I need to, he is one of the top talents in comics in my opinion. He’s as good a penciler as inker. He’s done work for DC Comics on Batman and others and work at Marvel and just about every major company out there. We were fortunate to get his work early in his career right after he graduated from Joe Kubert’s School. We knew this guy would go places! We had the same feeling about Thomas O’Conner.

Any questions or comments? All are welcome.

Super Bowl Champs • Super Bowl Ads • When Losers Win

Friday, February 8th, 2019

Welcome to Friday’s Mega Comics Group Updates!

Champs Celebrates

The Patriots win their sixth Super Bowl!

We have a 2018 World Champion!

As predicted the New England Patriots have prevailed fro a 6th time over a worthy opponent to win the 53rd Super Bowl! We all expected a good, competitive and high scoring game. Oh well, two out of three ain’t bad as the ol’ song said. Yes, it was a good game depending on your viewpoint. For diehard football fans who have been around long enough to remember the days of tough defenses that ruled the league it was a real hoot! Like one commentator said it was a “throwback game.” This was a shock for most who had gotten use to some high scoring offense this season like has rarely been seen before in Pro Football. It was competitive to be sure, mainly on defense. But is was not the be offensive shootout most of us expected. It was all field goals until half way through the fourth quarter when the Patriots posted their first and only touchdown. The final was 13 – 3. not the flashiest victory by the Patriots but a win is win.

But as we promised history was made! Coach Bill Belichick is the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl, and the only coach to ever win 6 Super Bowls. Tom Brady is the only quarterback to ever win 6 Super Bowls. Neither one has any plans for retirement, so it is likely we will see them both in the hunt for another Super Bowl win next year and possibly for 2 – 3 years after that. Of course, there are no guarantees on this scenario since we never know what else might happen n that time frame.

Super Bowl commercials are usually one of the great side benefits of the Big Game. This year there were only a few we all thought was really funny. One of our favorites was the Walmart movie and TV cars ad featuring the original KITT from Knight Rider, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, one of the Batmobiles and many more. Then there was this one…

Mark’s Remarks

When Losers Are Winners!

Did you see the post game interviews after the Super Bowl? Some of it was a little funny, and some was profound.

First the media folks just could not seem to get Tom Bradys attention. It was humorous to watch. Tom was more interested in shaking hands and thanking his team mates, coaches, team owners and friends from the other team. But he did eventually get around to talking to reporters too. It’s understandable, the press always swarms the quarterbacks and coaches and they often miss speaking to those they want to show gratitude or congratulate because one reporter after another sucks the air out of the room! 😉 So, this time, the press had to humble themselves a little and wait patiently for Mr. Brady to come back and talk to them.  Very appropriate.

Later the coaches gave their assessments of the game. Most are more interested in what the winners of the Big Game have to say, and rightly so. But right here I want to draw your attention to Coach Sean McVay, of the L.A. Rams. We have seen it all from indignation to melancholy to shock, but this time the loser displayed sincere humility. How do I know it was sincere? Well, some folks try to put on an act of humility while its obvious by their words, tone of voice and/or actions it’s just an act. But as I listened to Coach McVay, the youngest head coach at age 33 to take his team to a Super Bowl, it was very apparent this guy really learned from his experience. He took all the responsibility for the loss without blaming it on any one. It was not the players fault, or the assistant coaches, or the fans, or politics, or any of a hundred different excuses which we’ve heard others make.

Now, don’t read between the lines here, there is nothing there! This is not a critique of any one head coach or any individual at all. This reflects more on where we are in society today. It seems like one in a million will take full responsibility for their actions. Many will say it, but only one in a million show evidence that it is anything other than lip service. How many really take responsibility and make changes to attempt to have a different outcome the next time the opportunity to win comes around? How many had rather just be a victim, blame it on everyone and everything and never go anywhere? It’s the ol’ “Nobody loves me” syndrome!

Winners don’t think about why they might lose, they think about how they will win! That one key will fill a person with such positive energy that they don’t have room for anything negative. When they win then they celebrate a little while and get back to work. When they lose they shake it off and get back to work. It’s that simple. They don’t live in the past, they live for the future. Our whole nation could benefit from that philosophy. We have whole cultures in this country that are so hung up on the past, either what they did or didn’t do or what someone did to them and they never go anywhere. They are like a car stuck in the mud. Many of these people call themselves Progressives. How can you progress if you are always looking back? See how far you get in your car if you are  focused exclusively on what is happening in your rearview mirror! The rearview mirror is a necessary tool if used correctly. But if you focus on that and nothing else you are sure to have a wreck!

Coach Sean McVay and his the L.A. Rams will be back in the Super Bowl. That is, they will IF they maintain the humility to learn, make adjustments. and go forward. Now, THAT is progressive! 😉

Remember the Facebook Comic Con?

The FBCC was instrumental in the establishment of this web site. Unfortunately it’s gone now, but it lives on the memories of those of us who remember it. For those of you who don’t, here’s a peek at what it was all about in this original post from 2009,  minus the links to the original Facebook pages which no longer exist. Just another extra courtesy of the MCG.com 10th Anniversary Celebration. You’re welcome. 😉

(Edited and revised from the original post of Monday, March 2nd, 2009.)

MCG at the Facebook Comics Convention

The original FBCC Mega Comics Group introduction page.

And welcome back to us!  ?Back from our sabbatical but running a little late this Monday morning.

To sign up and get more info: Facebook Comic Con.

That’s the old news! The NEW News is Mega Comics Group will be participating in the convention and is now signed up and has a table set up. Events in planning include:

Mike produced some awesome work back in the 70’s and 90’s for Marvel and DC and is no slouch when it comes to quality artwork either! He did the art for the Facebook Comics Con Poster/Header seen above. Folks, do you  really want to miss this? No, we didn’t think so. CU there!

Yet Even More of Marvel’s Greatest Covers!

FF # 77Everyone so loved the 60’s Marvel cover galleries we put together a 3rd collection.

Back in the day, comic books were displayed on the ol’ spinner racks strategically placed at the market, corner drugstore, mom and pop store, newsstand or even some gas stations. (This was before convenience stores.)  The cover art was carefully planned out and executed. The verbiage on the covers likewise. The logos and even the placement of the infamous Comics Code Seal of approval. These were not paintings, they were bold cartoon drawings lovingly produced by masters of the craft with flat solid colors contrasting with each other vying for the attention of the comic book buyer.

As kids we had no comic book specially shops so we would run all over town to each location we had embedded into the built in maps in our heads, seeking out the latest issue of the titles we faithfully followed every month. Having accomplished our mission with treasure in hand we handed the merchant coins from our allowances, earnings from yard mowing or other chores and even turning in pop bottles for cash deposits. We hurried home to read our new books. Sometimes afterwards we’s pull out our collection and trade with each other. Fun times!

Marvel’s Greatest Covers #3 brought to you by the likes of  Jack Kirby, John Buscema, Gene Colon, Jim Steranko, John Romita, Wally Wood, Bill Everette, Joe Sinnott, Frank Giacoia, Don Heck, Vince Colletta, Steve Ditko, Chic Stone, Paul Reinman, Dick Ayers, Gil Kane, John Severin, Maria Severin, Herb Trimpe, Jay Gavin, George Tuska,  Neal Adams and probably a name or 2 we could not remember. And let’s not forget the writers and editor contributions from  Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Arnold Drake and Roy Thomas gave us the Marvel Age of Comics!

MCG Turns Ten!

Project: NewMan #3 AND the Humants #3 will both be available soon from our  Comics Store and the fine folks at IndyPlanet and DriveThru Comics.

MCG Turns Ten!Here, from our Web Archives, enjoy the first postings of Project: NewMan and Humants exactly as they were 10 years back in June 2008. Keep in mind as you read, back in the day, we were posting a page everyday rather than weekly as we do now. So any references to “tomorrow,” was then and this is now. Rather than tomorrow, our next pages from 2008 will be posted next Friday. However, if yo don’t want to to wait, just keep reading. All the pages are there. We are just spotlighting what we’ve done here.

Coming Soon to the Archives Section! We will be adding in the postings for Mega Tales #1 featuring Tess, the Living Tesseract!

Alternatively, for an even more awesome comics reading goodness, go to our Comics Store and purchase the PDF for a measly buck! You can read the pdf right in your browser which is not nearly as limited as reading it on the web page! In addition to that, you can download the pdf to your computer or iDevice to read it whenever and wherever you like even if you don’t have an internet connection. But for now let’s go to the Way Back Machine 10 years ago…

Project: New Man 1 Page 7

Okay last page of the set-up! Dave Davison A.K.A. New Man on a hunch and the info he gathered from a newspaper article has ventured out to a local mall in the bustling city of New Harbor. As fate would have it, New Man spots a potential perp almost immediately. But fate will be terribly cruel this day as Dave will soon learn.

Mark's Profile PicMark’s Remarks: I know I did some tones on this book, but I look at it now and some of the toning may have been done by someone else. Freazie might remember. I do remember doing some inking assists and art corrections. I recall having a lot of fun first penciling these pages and later getting to work on the production aspects of putting together the comic. The job can be tedious at times but rewarding none the less.

Humants 1 Page 7

Humants 1 Page 7

A somber scene… which is a prelude to the drama to come!

Mark’s Remarks: Very nice effects on this page, if i do say so myself! ? One of my favorites in this issue. Freazie never got much credit but he did some great storytelling with his pencils! He’s gonna do some more real soon, he tells me!

Mark's Profile PicThe Zipatone works better here! Allan Lewis and myself get credit for the tones on this one. I think we got it a bit better balanced here. Some pages we overdid with halftones and the art lost some of it’s contrast. I think contrast is a very important part of comic art whether it’s a color or black and white book.
