Project: New Man #3 – Page 9 – We are back to working on changes related to the background and the use simulated  Duo-Shade for the backgrounds of Project: NewMan #3. But due to several unforeseen delays, including the page was a bit harder to clean off than some of the others, this is the only one we have to show today. The next page is in the works but could not be finished in time for today’s blog. To the left you can see, and click to see a larger image of the, original page as it was scanned so many moons ago. Unfortunately the 25 year old original art pages Duo-Shade tones had faded some and so the scanner could not pick up everything as it was originally produced. PNM #1 Anniversary Issue To the right you can see the cleaned up, restored art for page 9 of Project NewMan # 3. You can see a big difference. It may not be perfect but it is a lot better. Mark says this is about a 95% restoration to the original. In some ways it’s even better. He also informed us the tones on the original Duo-Shade art boards did not develop as well as it should have when these were first produced. It could have been some old developer fluid or maybe the art boards were old when purchased but some areas did not develop as clearly as should have. So in that way these are better than the originals.

The Game of Life • Avengers: Infinity War Trailer #2 • PNM #3 Pages 22-23 Revised

Friday, April 27th, 2018

Welcome to Friday’s Mega Comics Group Updates!

We have to keep it short and sweet this week due to the approaching, Alpha-Omega #200, dreaded, deadline doom! As an A-O Alum, Mark has been digging through old APAzine tribs putting together his trip for the 200th Issue. So of course all ye ol’ Mega Minons have pitched in and everything is on semi-hold until that task is complete. The deadline to contribute to A-O 200 is May 7th.

The Game of Life & the Avengers

Game Of Life Prologue Page 1In the summer of 1987 A-O # 15 was in the mail…

Billy Leavell was the outgoing Central Mailer and Steve Shipley had just started his term as CM with #13. We had been an APA for  2.5 years. Several members were chafing at the bit to do some actual comics! Billy came up with the idea of tag team writers and artists taking up where the previous team left off with each new chapter and take the story anywhere there imaginations would take them based only on what had gone before. Billy started it with the script, pencils and lettering for the first chapter which was 4 or 5 pages. Mark Poe was invited to ink those pages. He was working another idea for a strip when he got the pages from Billy to embellish. The story had similarities to the strip Mark wanted to do. He had two pages done and decided to make it the Prologue. He checked with Billy and it was agreed, so he ran that first installment of The Game of Life in A-O 15. It was just 2 pages. We have the scanned art pages here to share with you. Bear in mind these scans are from photo copies, not the original art, which Mark no longer has in his possession. So these are a little rougher than what we would like to share. We cleaned them up as much as possible.

Game Of Life Prologue Page 2This little 2 page prologue introduced a character Mark dubbed the Archangel. It was about 6 months BEFORE Marvel would revamp their character the avenging Angel from the X-Men into a different Archangel. This was not the first time a mainstream comics company would snap up a character name Mark or Freazie White, Jr. were using. Image Comics published a book entitled New Man with a character of the same name after Mark and Freazie began Project: NewMan. The same thing happened a few years later when DC introduced a character called Mageddon. It was like someone was reading our mail! Is it possible? Well, it could be, or it could be a coincidence. Things like that have happened in the comic book business before. Remember when Marvel introduced Man-Thing and DC brought out Swamp Thing at almost the same time? Anything is possible, but one thing is certain, Mark and Freazie created Archangel, NewMan and Mageddon FIRST. So there! 😉

Next week we’ll share that first chapter of The Game of Life with you. Also we’ll share the second chapter the week after that which Mark scripted, penciled and lettered. Steve Shipley supplied the inks on that chapter, but more on all that later.

Here’s the Avengers: Infinity War, YouTube trailer # 2!

Mark’s Remarks: Mark's Profile Pic

I’ve had a lot of fun the past month prepping my trib for the 200th Issue of the  Amateur Press Association (APA) called Alpha-Omega. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 30 years since Freazie and I were bi-monthly contributors to A-O. As I wrote previously I started as a writer for A-O more so than an artist. I would type up chapters of my work and include a few illustrations to go along with it. Freazie joined up and read a couple of chapters of my story Living on the Razor’s Edge. Freazie asked if he could adapt my story to comics form. I said sure and even offered to ink it. I  thought as a team we could probably pull it off and we did for several issues.

Another A-O Trib Cover for Razor's Edge by Mark PoeRazors Edge came before the Legacy Comics Universe.  It was meant to be a more realistic take on the old super powered human concept we fondly refer to as the Super Hero. My main inspiration for the series was the Fantastic Four and The X-Men. I wanted to catch the family and action elements of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s FF and the teenage aspects of their X-Men. In the ’80’s Chris Clairmont and John Byrne was doing that with new variations of both of these titles, so I had that too for inspiration. I wanted to make it a step farther by borrowing from Lee’s idea for heroes WITHOUT spandex costumes but rather outfitted in regular street clothes like he and Jack did in FF #1-3  It was a concept I had worked on for several years before joining A-O. I first thought of it as a comic book,  then as a comic strip and finally decided to write it out in prose form and publish it in A-O. Freazie would read my typed chapters and then condense them down to comic book pages. He would pencil the pages and letter in his dialogue, then when I go the penciled pages I would ink all of it including Freazie’s lettering. Neither of us were very good letterers. We later talked Billy Leavell into taking over in that department for us on our subsequent Small Press and Independent Comics projects. Billy was a top notch letterer, penciler, inker and scripter. He was very fast too.

Time marched on and for reasons I don’t recall right now, we decided on different characters for our first small press comic books and then the independent comics later. Freazie had characters he had created years before we worked together which evolved into the Humants. I had character I originally called Para-man which became NewMan. As the NewMan and the Humants universe grew together we brought Razor’s Edge into it as well. Their were sub-plots involving Senator Razor and the other characters but they never got fully introduced into either the Project: NewMan or the Humants titles. Who knows? After Humants #6 finally get’s put together later this year, maybe someday Razor’s Edge will return.

🙂

Onward! Mark

Project: New Man 3 Page 22 OLD

Project: New Man New Man 3 Page 22Project: New Man #3 – Page 22-23– Here we go again with yet two more pages of revised art. We continue to add simulated  Duo-Shade tones to the  black and white pages from Project: NewMan #3.

Pages 22 and 23 are showcased for this week. As you may recall,  there was no background halftones originally on these pages by Chris Torres and Mark Poe which make up Chapter 7 of The Haunted Man storyline. This art was originally done on Bristol Board which has always been the chosen working surface for most comic book pencilers. Thanks to Photoshop we can simulate the shading which use to be done on the Duo-Shade illustration boards.

Click the before and after images here, to see larger views and compare the art.

Project: New Man 3 Page 23 OLD

Project: New Man New Man 3 Page 23

When we dug out all this material several years ago to start this web site we just scanned and cleaned up the original inked pages and presented them as is. Chapter 7 had never had any halftones like we did on the previous chapters.

Back in the day we had two ways of adding halftones to the original art. We could use the Duo-Shade boards like we used in Chapters 1-6 or we could use full sheets of adhesive Zip-atone. Zip-atone and  Letratone were two of the products available which did the same thing.  This graphic design material consisted of thin plastic film with a slight adhesive over a backing sheet which was used to place a halftone dot screen across an area of a black and white illustration. The dot pattern came in a variety of gray-tone percentages and in different sizes of dots, measured as lines per inch. Some were straight percentage tones or lines. Some would be gradients and some special op-art. Some were pretty cool looking!

The way you used Zip-atone was to place it over your drawing, on a light table preferably, cut out the shape with an Exacto knife, carefully lift it, and place it over the drawing, then smooth it out. Another brand offered halftones which could be rubbed off onto the selected area. These, however were often messy and usually stuck to areas you didn’t want tones on.

Welcome to Friday’s Mega Comics Group Updates!

AAF Week 9 Begins CANCELED!

The Teams of the AAF

AAF App

Everything on the AAF App for iPhone and Android Still works except ticket sales.

AAF week 9 WAS this weekend! There were 2 more games left in the inaugural, regular season, with 2 playoff games and a championship game yet to be played.  Now there are none!

The Alliance of American Football has suspended operations. Yes, for true football fans, those of us who would watch the game year round if we could, this is indeed a sad day! The AAF was meant to be a feeder or farm league for the NFL. The football side of the operations was set up well enough but from sources we’ve heard the business side was not. We noticed early on there was almost no advertising of the new league so we wondered just how many football fans really knew about it. We also noticed the stadiums were not drawing large crowds. The record was set by San Antonio a couple weeks ago when thy reached 30,ooo. Most we observed did not look like they had a thousand people in them so it’s safe to say they were probably losing money on ticket sales. We also noted that the games were not broadcast on the regular outlets. CBS put most games on there CBS Direct Access pay app rather than the CBS national broadcast channel. There were no games on ESPN. There were games on the NFL Network. The others were cable networks like TNT. You could get a raw footage view of the game on the AAF App which was nice but there was no announcer or on screen score box or clock.

All that leads us to believe that the AAF was launched a year too soon. Had they waited another year and built their infrastructure during that time they might have pulled it off. Rumors were flying that the XFL was going to relaunch in 2020, so the AAF powers that be probably thought they needed to get ahead of the competition. They had trouble meeting payroll and covering a lot of other costs which came to a head about the second or third week of play. That’s when Tom Dundon came to the rescue with a promise of 250 million dollars to help bankroll the start-up. After $70,00o,ooo into it, he decided to pull the plug. He had been given total authority over the AAF when he came on board with the needed and promised funds. That was probably a mistake. There are a lot of rumors an accusations flying around now but who knows what is true.

AAF Standings

The AAF Standings FINAL STANDINGS!

So here we are. Players and coaches are out of work and fans are denied seeing the full season played out. No more Winter/Spring Football League! Even though the games are over the web site and the phone app are still working as of this writing, all except ticket sales, of course. The App was/is cutting edge! You could watch the box score to follow the game and play a game in itself by predicting the next play for your own points while you monitored the scoring. You could also watch a raw footage view of the game which was nice but there was no announcer or on screen score box or clock. Previous weeks games could be replayed from the App Score Box too. All this is still available at the time of this writing but it probably won’t be up much longer.

It was fun while it lasted! The AAF was a good package but it was not given long enough to build a fan base. The original plan was based on a 3 year building process. That’s why we think it was a bad thing to allow Tom Dundon to have the authority to shut it down if he did not think it was working. Sure he was investing the money so conventional wisdom says he should call the shots, but it takes time to build something like this. We can understand, he may have been looking at the rate of return on the $70,00o,ooo he had already sunk into the league and did not think it would catch on in time to return a profit. True, not many have $250,00o,ooo to just throw away on a risky venture. So it may not have been avoidable. We certainly don’t know all the details so we will cut Mr. Dundon some slack. What do all know is that the NFL was not built overnight, it was years before it reached profitability. So have we come to a point in our society where everything just cost too much to start and see through? Or is it people in business are far too impatient these days? Maybe a little of both and more besides.

The AAF Was a Great Attempt!

Rest In Peace AAFHow many Pro Football Leagues, outside the NFL, have we seen come and go? There have been 6 since 1969 not counting Arena Football which may have lasted longer than any of the others. The XFL only lasted one season but at least they got past their post season championship game. Rumor has it the XFL is suppose to start up again in 2020.

Will the AAF return? It’s doesn’t look likely. Had they finished the season, maybe, but as it is now the brand is damaged. It would take a lot to restore confidence to players and fans for a reboot. However, if they got the right funding…that is someone to back them until it actually has a chance to grow a fan base and start making a profit, well, anything is possible. People tend to forget how things start. Amazon started and ran for years without showing a profit. Now Amazon is the biggest merchandiser on the web and expanding out into brick and mortar stores as well. Just think where we would be now if they had pulled the plug on Amazon less than a year after it started up!

(Read more about it at Wikipedia or go to the AAF website.)

Avengers Endgame

Wow! Another Avengers movie will be released at the end of this month.

Avengers: Endgame is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios and set for distribution by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the direct sequel to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, a sequel to 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo with a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and features an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Bradley Cooper, and Josh Brolin. In the film, the surviving members of the Avengers and their allies work to reverse the damage caused by Thanos in Infinity War.

The film was announced in October 2014 as Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2. The Russo brothers came on board to direct in April 2015, and by May, Markus and McFeely signed on to script the film. In July 2016, Marvel removed the title, referring to it simply as Untitled Avengers film. Filming began in August 2017 at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia, shooting back-to-back with Infinity War, and ended in January 2018. Additional filming took place in the Metro and Downtown Atlanta areas and New York. The official title was revealed in December 2018.

The film is scheduled for release in the United States on April 26, 2019, in IMAX and 3D.

Another Big Brother Report

“Seattle is dying.” according to veteran Seattle reporter Eric Johnson of KOMO. Last month he did a documentary which exposes the epic homeless problem which city officials have done nothing about other than install policies to encourage the problem. A real journalist in the city finally had enough. But rather than admit there is a problem the city officials are doing their best to discredit the reporter and the documentary. In effect that are saying “It’s not as bad as it looks on TV. There is no runaway homeless problem. Everything is fine. nothing to see here”

According to leaked documents, the City of Seattle and its allies have retained a crisis-communications firm to discredit, the reporter, Eric Johnson, and insist, despite all evidence to the contrary, that “Seattle is making progress to end homelessness, and proven solutions are working.”

Can you say, “Orwell’s Ministry of Truth.” The strategy seems to be dependent on Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan using taxpayer resources to attack a respected local journalist and convince taxpayers that they shouldn’t trust their own eyes, with homelessness and addiction and piles of human feces on the streets. Remember, Big Brother always tries to propagandize the exact opposite of the real. This development begs for further observation.

Since we began our 3 part article on “Big Brother is Watching Us” 3 weeks ago, we keep seeing more and more evidence of the reality of 1984 in 2019. As we run across more we’ll keep you informed.

Kirby’s DC Comics Covers

Mr Miracle and the Feamale Furies

Jacks’s DC 1970’s Covers #3! Probably our last look at Jack’s covers from the early ’70’s five year stint at DC Comics.

Jack’s best concepts were the Fourth World  books of New Gods, Mr. Miracle and the Forever People. However, Mr. Kirby had several more titles while he was under contract with DC. Kamandi was the most commercially successful title Jack did at DC which lasted 59 issues, with Jack editing, writing and drawing 37 of those and providing pencils on an additional handful. There was also the Demon series, The Sandman,  OMAC and several tryouts in First Issue Special. Jack also told his World War 2 stories in The Losers, did art in Kung Fu Fighter, Kobra, Justice Inc. and a few others.

Hmmm… come to think of it, they’re might be enough for a Jacks’s DC 1970’s Covers #4!

Enjoy!

Mark’s Remarks:

Things to Come

Eagle Ranger

One of the flagship characters for the new Resolute Comics imprint. His name? Well, we’ve called him Eagle 1, Bald Eagle and Eagle Ranger. Which name will we settle on? That remains to be seen. We are still filling in the blanks in his backstory and origin tale. Stay tuned!

I know you can find this info in other areas of the web site but I feel obligated to share with you, briefly, how we got to where we are now in order to set you up for some new information. Also there may be a few things in this telling which have not been shared before. Why retell it? To clue you in on where we are going and giving you the background which hopefully explains why we are going there. Make sense? Well, hang in there, wayfarer, all will be made clear. I hope…

Mega Comics Group: I started this web site back in June of 2008, 10 years ago, to showcase previous comic book stories and art I have been involved with in my life. Since I was a very young child I’ve had an ambition to draw comic book stories and that’s really all I wanted to do. But also, if need be, do the writing, lettering and coloring as well. In other words whatever it would take for me to accomplish my desire to draw comic book stories, that was what I was going to do. This desire came to light in my brain when I first saw animated cartoons on TV, the Batman TV series circa 1967-68 and later comic books.

Legacy Comics: Freazie White, Jr. and I  began Legacy around 1990, if memory serves me, but the first published comics were still a few months out. Actual publication began in 1991. There were several folks involved in that first Project: NewMan story in addition to us. (You can find that info on the inside front cover page of PNM#1 on this web site). The concept, characters design and story were mine but of course Freazie White, Jr. added a lot of his ideas and did the writing of the scripts for the most part. When I began this site it was with the idea of re-publishing what we had published in the Independent Comics Market which were available at Comic Book Specialty Shops, as well as those issues we had finished but never had a chance to print due to lack of funds at the time. Since turning the whole kit and kaboodle into web comics, I then proceeded to re-package all of the issues for a second printing under the category of Legacy Comics 25th Anniversary Re-issues and MCG.com 10th Anniversary Special Editions. Unfortunately, getting all those out to the printers has again come under budget considerations as well as time to complete the whole re-packaging process. Doing comics publishing in my spare time in addition to a full time, regular job, taking care of family and eating and sleeping occasionally is a big trick! One I’ve not totally mastered yet. Being an old dog now doesn’t help, because you can’t teach an old dog…. Never mind! 😉 In addition to all that, there is the weekly care and updating of this very web site plus I have given aid and assistance to some of my peers in the field such as good buddy Edgar Camp and his A-Men Book Line as well as some of Freazie’s up and coming projects. But let’s not get out in the weeds on this, time is short. Ahem! Anyway, sum it all up to say, “Things have not gone exactly as planned the past year.”

Now Enter: Resolute Comics! Yes, I can hear it now, “What? Another imprint? MCG is already hosting the Legacy Comics titles and Dimension Graphics pre-Legacy title Tess, the Living Tesseract and you are not even done with those yet!” Absolutely correct! But the character above is not exactly new, having been in our very second post way back on Sunday June 22, 2008 and on a follow up Monday, July 14th, 2008. We called him Eagle Ranger in that last post. He will be one of the flag ship characters for Resolute Comics.

Mega Tales

From our second posting back on Sunday June 22, 2008: “Coming Soon! More short features from Legacy Comics, Magi Graphics (our small press label) and more! Solo adventures of The Cricket, The Herald, Bearcat, Capt. Testament and more! Including more never before published material!”

Originally he was intended to be in Mega Tales but most likely we’ll keep Resolute Comics isolated from the rest of our work, for reasons to be revealed later. This comics imprint itself will be different from anything we’ve done before and I dare to say from much of anything that has ever been published before. But we’ll let you be the judge of that. I’ll just leave you with that tease and leave myself something more to talk about in my next column.

In addition to that, you can download the pdf to your computer or iDevice to read it whenever and wherever you like even if you don’t have an internet connection. But for now let’s go to the Way Back Machine 10 years ago…

New Man 1 Page 14June 23, 2008

Project: New Man 1 Page 15

Here we have a life and death standoff. New Man has no options here and there is no way he can reach the woman before the killer pulls the trigger. So, the super hero, with all the powers, is essentially powerless and has to rely on reasoning with a person who is on the verge of  total mental meltdown. There’s no way to predict what such a person will do. What would you do?

Mark’s Remarks:

Mark's Profile PicThere is not much action in this chapter but the dramatic tension is high. I like the idea that in this instance, after having been trained to use his power over the Unified Field, NewMan has to rely on his wits to over come this situation. He probably did not get much training in that area from the Fortress Foundation or in his previous line of work. And what of that previous line of work? We’re about learn more on that! Stay tuned.

Any questions or comments? All are welcome.

Now that the hero introductions are out of the way it’s time to prep for the introduction of our chief villain. Watch as Freazie pulls off some nice storytelling here and leads us through the origin of our baddie.

Mark’s Remarks: We had the name first! A few years ago one of the big two comics companies, Marvel I think it was, swiped our chief villain’s name: Mageddon for use on a totally different villain in one of their big crossover events. I’ve always heard if your stuff is worth stealing, that’s a big compliment… No, wait… it’s “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”… or something like that. So I guess we’re flattered.. yeah, anyway… just so you know, we had that name first!

It was the same with the name NewMan. We used it first then one of the guys at Image Comics used it for his own character. So this happened more than once. Coincidence? Maybe… Of course in comic books, names have been used for characters, especially villains, by more than one company over the years. It use to be fairly common. For instance Marvel and DC had villains called The Thinker. But these days, lawsuits, and more so, threats  of lawsuits over copyright infringement are easy to come by. You will notice on book covers now the small TM (trademark) by just about every name used. It should be noted here, the one threatening a lawsuit has to have the money to pay the lawyers to back it up, which, naturally is no problem for the big two. It’s been an interesting  observation of mine, that usually it’s the small companies, who don’t have the money to defend themselves in court, the big guys usually threaten with “cease and desist” letters. They seem to be far more tolerant of each other with such characters as Captain Marvel, for instance. Just saying…

Any questions or comments? All are welcome.
