Project: New Man

• Updates Online DAILY – Project: New Man #3! – The Full Length back-up feature from Legacy Comics 1991 Black and White 48 page Independent Comic Humants #2 and never before published material!

The tale we call The Haunted Man began late one night in Project: New Man #1. While on patrol in the city of New Harbour, New Man overheard the aimless braggadocio conversation of congregated street hoods. The name Ebenezer Baal had been at the center of the conversation. It was an alias of one incredibly elusive crime lord, whose true identity remained a mystery.

New Man made his way to the warehouse and was met by an ambush. Better than a dozen heavily armed men had found New Man’s Unified Field to be more than a match for their armament, alas, Baal himself had managed to escape.

A young costumed adventurer called Bearcat arriving on the scene, spots Baal’s timely exit and follows Baal to his hideout. Being somewhat new to the heroing business, the ofttimes presumptuous Bearcat soon finds himself face to face with Cyber-Tech, a cybernetic lackey of Baal’s.  Cyber-Tech holds a grudge against the Thunderhawks (New Man’s trainers) and is intent on their destruction. No one, not even Bearcat or New Man, will stand in the way of the cyborg’s goals!

Written by Freazie White, Jr. with art by Nathan Massengill, Mark Poe & Christopher Torres. Expert lettering by Billy Leavell.

Project: New Man is a partly secret joint venture of the U.S. Government and the Fortress Foundation, a private sector, non-profit, philanthropic organization dedicated to public defense and scientific research. Dave has the dual role of being part of the research project and at the same time being groomed by the Government as a public protector in the Five Lakes Megalopolis area of New Harbour.

Humants

• Updates Online DAILY – Humants #2! – The lead story in Legacy Comics 1992 Black and White 48 page Independent Comic: Humants!

The Humants, The Herald, Magistar, and Man Ark are introduced to and must enter into deadly battle with Megeddon, the Dark Lord of the Hecati and his chief servant, the powerhouse called Devastax! Their goal: no less than total world destruction! The Herald is intent on stopping them as he administers the judgment called The Experience which he recently found out from Omni Spawn is his destiny to perform. Mageddon, is not very cooperative!

Krystal McCliston, investigative reporter for the TV show A Cyrstal View, tries to capture the action on video while dodging falling debris. This, it turns out, is good practice in survival when she later comfronts a new villain: The Tower!

Introducing also in this issue Janeta Rosebud of Rosebud Diversified Financial who will soon meet Omni Spawn and things will never again be the same!

Written,  and drawn  by Freazie White, Jr., embellishment by Mark Poe and featuring awesome lettering by Billy Leavell.

The Humants are by no means mutants by another name. The series, is about a loose-knit band of characters from diverse walks of life who have been summoned to partake of an incredible power called Khosmotic. This enigmatic force re-creates its chosen, not mutates, and gradually conforms them into its own image. Thus it’s chosen become Khosmotic Warriors. They are the appointed of the Khosmotic Conjunction. The team’s base of operations is in the in the Five Lakes Megalopolis area and more specifically Municipal City.

Of Humants, New Man, & Router Problems

Humants 2 Pg27 panel3

Sorry for the delayed updates. I had some issues with my Hughes Net Router this morning after logging on to the web. I’ve worked on Macs and PC’s for 20 years, used this router for 5, built websites, troubleshooted all kinds of computer, printer and network problems for myself and clients but I’ve never seen any thing like this before. I could get any web site except my own. I rebooted the Router and everything was fine. Strange. Then I had some thick cloud cover blocking my satellite reception. Geeze! If it’s not one thing… 🙁

Here’s my favorite panel from today’s Humants # 2 update. The Herald confronts Mageddon for the second time! As you can see he’s more than a little ticked off that this has to be the second encounter after his botched first attempt to subdue the Dark Lord of the Hecati!

New Man 3 Pg 16 Panel2

On the lighter side over in Project: New Man # 3, Dave is fulfilling a special request with two young fellows he met while doing his morning jog through the New Harbour Central Park. I always loved the scenes where Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had The Thing of the Fantastic Four entertaining some kids on one of his leisure outings in New York, which was what inspired this little exchange.

Humants 2 Pg 28 Panel 3

What a day I had Saturday! Everything seemed to be about 6 degrees off center. First there was the Hughes Net Router problems, then the thick clouds blocking my satellite reception. So I finally got everything updated on the sites and had to rush out to finish mowing the yard which I started Friday afternoon. Actually 3 yards, ours, the vacant house next door, and my wife’s Grandmother’s old yard. She passed on a few weeks ago. All these are in our extended family out in the country where we live, so it’s up to my Father-in-law and I to keep them up. Unfortunately he has had to work overtime all week covering for someone on vacation. My oldest son use to help out but he’s off at college now. My younger son is not yet old enough to do much mowing, but he’s learning. I’ve got the mowing down to a tight routine and usually it’s not hard at all and goes off on schedule, about a 4 hour job tops, but not the past two weeks. All the rain we’ve had  from the storms in the Gulf has the grass growing like crazy! Then of course I ran out of gas and had to go pawn the TV to buy 5 gallons. 😉 Just kidding about pawning the TV, but to fill my 5 gallon can it cost $21.00! I wasn’t that long ago that it only cost me 6 or 7 bucks! So after wasting an hour getting gas I got back and got the mowing done, all except the trimming around the edges. 6 hours mowing! Geeze! 🙁

Today, I have a couple small outside jobs to do but for the most part, I work on web sites! 🙂

Above is a nice panel from today’s Humants # 2 update. The Herald and Man Ark converse on plans for the Humants to pool their resources as a team. The best lines of the script actually are in the last panel but I didn’t want to show that here and ruin the joke.

New Man 3 Pg17 Panel 3

In Project: New Man # 3, New Man leaps into action, literally. A cool shot of the Moriah Building. This building was inspired by an actual skyscrapper in Birmingham, Alabama. I almost got arrested getting reference photos for this. Those guys in the Bellsouth Building were pretty ticked off that I got all the way up to the top floor without a security pass! It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it and watch for opportnities. 🙂

Legacy Comics Publishing Status

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I just made inventory of our original artwork Sunday. Here’s what we have left from our stock of stories and art:

Project: New Man #3: We are on page 18 of this 32 page issue.

Project: New Man #4: We have pages 1-8 to start this issue. We will have 23 more NEW story pages plus the covers. These pages will conclude The Haunted Man story line originally plotted 16 years ago! It will feature the story by Freazie White, Jr. and myself with art by me, Mark Poe.

This will wrap up the New Man stories unless there is demand for more or we have an idea for a new story that will fit the New Man mythos. It also gives us 128 pages if we want to do a Project: New Man Trade Paperback of these stories. So we are not closing any doors here, all options are open and on the table.

Now for the Humant’s report.

Humants # 2: We on page 28 of 32 pages so we’re about to wrap this one up.

Humants # 3: We have everything we need here for 32 pages plus covers inside and out. All I have to do is a little production work.

Humants # 4: We have everything we need here for 32 pages plus covers inside and out. All I have to do is a little production work.

Humants # 5: We have 20 pages of story on this one. We need 12 more NEW pages plus the back cover.

Humants # 6: We may need to do some NEW page for this issue to tie up loose ends.

With that we will wrap up the Humants stories unless you demand more or we have an idea for a new Humants story. The total page count for the Humants title will be about 198 pages which will make for a great Humants Trade Paperback! So, again, we are not closing any doors here, all options are open and on the table.

All totaled, with our previous issues already in our web archives, this will give us over 300 pages of Legacy Comics online! That’s not counting a back-up features like Bearcat. Nor does it take tally of most of the pin-up art we’ve included in this blog! Neither does it count any of our Small Press work. That doesn’t include the work from Dimension Graphics we posted about the other day. With all that we’ll be over 400 pages on this site. WOW! I really did not realize we had done so much comic book related art!

After all this we will begin our new titles starting with Mega Tales.

Humants 2 Pg 29 Panel 1 & 2

A couple of great panels from today’s Humants # 2 update. Here’s a good example of why a young lady should never take a shortcut through a dark ally. Fortunately for Janeta Rodebud, Omnispawn is one of the good guys! 😉

New Man 3 Pg18 Panel 1

In Project: New Man # 3, So who or what does New Man see as he makes his way through the smoke and debris of the  Moriah Building.  I’ll give you some clues: it’s shiny, big and mean! Ah, heck, just click the image and head on over to Project: New Man and find out!

What’s To Come For Mega Comics Group

Humants 2 Pg 30 Panel 1

In Humants # 2 we started something we wanted to be a regular feature. It was the Legacy Communications Page which naturally was inspired by those Stan Lee Bullpen Bulletins of the 60’s and 70’s. We patterned a lot of the layout and the overall tone after several of the better Bullpen Bulletins we found going through our collection. We had a great time doing it and everyone at the conventions who came up to our tables seemed to get a reall kick out of it. Freazie and I had a great time putting it all together!

New Man 3 Pg19 Close-upA new chapter begins today in Project: New Man # 3.  Cyber-Tech isn’t gunning for New Man. No, he’s got a beef with the Thunder Hawks. In this chapter we see a little character development of Jonathan Thunderstorm, Thomas Jeffry McBride, and Percival Patton Parker. Christopher Torres makes his penciling debut!

When Freazie and I had the idea to put this web site together we really did not recall at the time just how much work we had amassed with Legacy Comics. Not to mention all the other comics work we had done. We thought we would put up the 3 issues we had published previously and move one. But we realized the stories in those early books were not concluded, so it seemed only fair to put out the unpublished issues as well, if we could find them! We look at this as the foundation for what’s to come. We may push back the release of our new title: Mega Tales a week or two to tie up some loose ends on the Humants and Project: New Man titles that were not taken care of before. But it’s all coming, so bear with us and we’ll get it all online for you.

Humants 2 Pg 31 Panel 2

I had a freak accident yesterday, unfortunately gaining super-powers was not the end result. 😉 Somehow while taking out the garbage, I pushed the bag down into the can which really already had too much in it. When I did, something punctured the bag and sliced my left thumb. I thought it may have been some broken glass, but my wife could not recall any glass in the garbage. So maybe it was the lid from one of the dog food cans. I don’t know but I got a deep cut out of it, probably enough to require some stitches. It was difficult to get it to stop bleeding. But I’ve got some of those Bandaids that pull a wound together so I should be fine. Even though it’s my left hand, and I’m right handed, I’m finding I have trouble typing and doing a lot of things that I normally do. It feels better today and hasn’t bled again since last night. So the moral of this story is, be careful with garbage. It’s more dangerous than you might think! 😉

In Humants # 2 shows page 2 of the Legacy Communications Page with an ad for Humants # 3 showing the original cover. After solicited orders from the distributors were low, I started looking around at other books on sale at  the time and thought maybe if we changed the cover and the logo it might stand out a bit better. Didn’t help that much. The orders were not much higher when we resolicited. You will see the original cover in Issue #3.

Project: New Man # 3.  Cyber-Tech comes face to face with the Thunder Hawks. We showcase the talents of Christopher Torres who penciled this and the next chapter. Chris did an awesome job and we would have asked him to do a lot more penciling had Legacy Continued. If memory serves me he might have also done some backgrounds on Humants # 3 or 4. Can’t remember which.New Man 3 Pg 20 Panel 2

Legacy Comics Tuesday, October 21 Updates

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Welcome to the Tuesday addition of the Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Still No New Man Update yet. Please bear with me just a little longer. A lot of demands have just hit at the same time and really I had rather deal with them now than later on, and in some cases we’ve put them off too long already. Since we launched this site in June it has been a great experiment. We have been putting it through the paces, now we are tying up all the loose ends, you might say, before our big Grand Opening in 2009! So it’s better to get things worked out while we’re small than when were big. Better to be embarrassed in front of a few than in front of a crowd!  😉 That’s the way we roll around here. 😀 Thank you for your patience.

Humants 3 Page 24 & 25 Spread

But, we do have the Humants to see about!

Humants #3:

Mageddon has begun to recruit an army of super powered bad guys using the opposite of Khosmenergy, which he calls Negamenergy to transform common criminals into their biggest dream and our worst nightmares! Yesterday we met Perimeter, Master Of Firearms, now add to that the scheming Shyster, The titanic Tower, and the brute known as Smasher Quinn!

Pages 24 and 25 we’re meant to be double page spreads, but with WordPress/ComicPress that’s difficult to do. I’ve posted page 25 here as normal but also supplied this link to pages 24 & 25 joined together as they are meant to be. Enjoy!

Legacy Comics Wednesday, October 22 Updates

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Good to see you! Welcome to the Daily Mega Comics Group Updates for Wednesday!

Project: New Man # 4 under construction. Like most creators I’ve had my bouts with Writers/Artist’s Block, but I’ve learned to distract myself with a temporary change of scenery or diversion of some sort to get the creative juices going again. I wish that was what I’m dealing with now! No, this is worse! I know exactly what to draw and the script is done, I just have had to deal with so many interruptions keeping me from finishing it. Things that would not or could not wait! It’s like a bad dream where I’m sinking in quicksand seeing a rope that I could grab to pull myself out, just inches away, just out of reach! ARRRGHH!

Working a regular job, running a part-time graphics business, maintaining 3 web comics sites daily, taking care of family and doing new pages for an adventure strips keep me on my toes, to say the least. I’ve been getting up in the wee hours of the morning and working late at night. That has not been the problem. When extra ordinary matters come up like business matters rearing their ugly heads, helping two different associates in two different cities open comic stores, helping a client get his computer back up after a hard disk failure, and really just one thing after another in addition to an already tight schedule, that’s a problem. BUT I won’t give up! So, please, don’t you give up either. We’ll have the Mega Comics Train back on schedule shortly. The bright side, however, is the Humants’ updates have been continuing DAILY, Monday-Friday without interruption. That counts for something, right? 🙂

Humants 3 Page 26 Panel 3

Okay, enough with the soap opera already! Let’s get on to some important matters like comics! 😉

Humants #3:

Mageddon’s Humant Renegades are here!  Perimeter, Shyster, The Tower, and Smasher Quinn! It seems the Dark Lord of the Hecati wants them to be a distraction to our own good guy Humants, so ol’ helmet head can wreak unbridled havoc where ever he so chooses. Pleasant thought, eh?

Freazie came up with these villains mostly in our Small Press days. These are the more modern versions, having undergone some modifications from the originals. Mr. White has always been a very ardent recycler! 😉  Freazie has the ability to create some interesting characters and it’s fun to see how he has them interact with each other as they plunder through the pages of the stories he writes and draws.

I nominate Shyster for the creepiest of the 4. The scary thing about him is I have known real life folks with this same exact power. Not as well developed, mind you, but enough to get the job done! Brrrrr! Just the thoughts of a master manipulator makes me shiver.

Smasher Quinn is the strong guy you see in every group, but I think Freazie portrays him more ruthless than just about any I’ve ever read in comics.

Perimeter is an interesting one! He’s master at weapons and I think, if memory serves me correctly, he can pluck them seemingly from thin air when ever he has a need for one.

The Tower is of course the field leader under Mageddon’s command.

Yep, our Humant Heroes may be in big trouble now. Stay tuned, web wayfarer! The fun has only begun! 😀

Legacy Comics Thursday, October 23 Updates

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Alright! You’re here! Welcome to Thursday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

The work on the 2008 pages for Project: New Man # 4 is moving right along. Updates will resume soon.

Even if I could have rushed it up some, I really did not want to. I want this issue of PNM to be the best it can be. We’ve come up with a good script and layouts from the 16 year old plot which ties up a lot of loose ends but leaves plenty of questions to lead into the new series.

We are doing the same thing with the Humants title as well. Once PNM #4 and Humants #6 are completely posted we’ll take a break to prepare for the new stories. We’ve done these 2008 pages very much the way we would have done it back in the 1990’s, but there are much better methods and technology available today to speed up the production. So we’ll get all this lined up during the hiatus.

While that’s going on we’ll be running Mega Tales so there will continue to be daily comics updates on MCG even after the current PNM and Humants material runs out.

Humants 3 Page 27 Panel 2

Now, let’s find our what’s going on in:

Humants #3:

Wow! Imagine you are in this situation: You just brokered a deal with a very powerful entity to gain great power for yourself. It’s a dream come true! Now everyone who ever doubted you or picked on you is about to see what you can do. Yeah, it’s payback time in a big way! What’s more the one who granted you this power will be dealing out punishment on the very society which has always kept you under it’s thumb! Yeah! The Man is about to get his butt kicked this time!

But wait a minute! What is it this guy is saying? It sounds like after he’s done handing out society’s just deserts, then he’s going to want to take back what he just gave you and more! So instead of a better deal you might have just cashed in your chips for a payout which has some strings attached. This deal has some ties which may cost you not only what little you had, but your very life! Yep, that’s what’s going through Johnathan Towers mind, as well as his associates.

Now then, maybe you thought we forgot about the battle between Chaosta and The Herald, but that’s not the case. We had to set the stage for their grand entrance and meeting with the Renegades! Leave it to them not to use the door! 😉

Yep, this situation is about to get even more interesting! Whatever you do don’t miss tomorrow’s page! Wait a minute! Ulp! Guess what? This is the last page of this issues story, so yep, you guessed it! To be continued! ARRGHH! >:-(

Legacy Comics Friday, October 24 Updates

Friday, October 24th, 2008

TGIF! Welcome to Friday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

The past few weeks, one of the projects which has kept me busy is cataloging my comics collection. Marcus Lusk, creator of the highly acclaimed Tales from the Bog series, Secret Doors and the Elf Trek mini-series, is opening Atomic Comics in downtown Gadsden, Alabama very soon. I volunteered to put my collection of comics which ranges from the 60’s to the 90’s in his shop on consignment. I’ve done this before with other shops but not as many as this time. I had these books cataloged about 12 years ago but my collection has changed so much I needed to make a new list. Plus some  needed bagging and boarded and since these are on consignment I have to label each one also. WHEW! Don’t let any one kid you, that’s a big job! I had forgotten just how much work is involved. It’s not really hard, but it is very time consuming! We’re almost done with it and Marcus just about has the rest of the shop set up, and looking great!  He’ll be open in another week or so, or he may open a while Saturday. We’ll be running some ads for him showing everyone just how to get there, so stay tuned.

Now, up north in Michigan, Freazie White, Jr. has decided to turn the front of his comics warehouse into a retail shop too. I got the privilege of designing some window graphics for him which was somewhat time consuming too since I printed the oversize graphics out, trimmed and laminated them.

With that, maintaining 3 comics web sites, my graphic design business, my full time job, spending a little time with my family, finishing my son’s club house, and fixing computers for clients, it’s a wonder I even get 5 hours sleep a night! Yep, I’m just glad it’s not less! But things should be better in another 3-4 weeks as a lot of these projects will be out of the way and I can get more of my attention on MCG. Looking forward to it!

Okay, time to do the comics update!

Humants #3:

Well, this one caught me by surprise! I was expecting to see the next page in the Humants story today. Geeze, Freazie, why did you have to stop it there for? You know how I hate continued stories! Sheesh! Oh well, in just a few days we’ll pick it up where we left off in Humants #4 with The Herald and Chaosta facing a whole bunch of mad baddies!

Today, we have a special treat! This is still Humants #3 and page 28 to be specific and even more specifically our very first Legacy Letters Page we had ready to go way back in 1992 when we had to cease publication. Finally after all these years our fans are getting their 2 cents worth! So kick back and relax and journey back with us to that magical time before email and fan forums on the web! How did we do it?

Special note: Our first letters page was actually 2 pages! Unfortunately the last letter on this page is continued on the next page and we’ll have to wait to read the rest until Monday. So until then, have a great weekend. Enjoy some great college football! By the way, ROLL TIDE!

Monday, Oct. 27 – Legacy Comics – New Man Pencils & Letters to Humants

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Welcome to Monday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates! We’re glad you could stop by.

How was your weekend? I actually got a little more rest but I got a lot of work done too. I got some Project: New Man #4 pages penciled, worked on my comics collection, got a little more done on my son’s club house, and watched a little football while I was working. By the way, the Crimson Tide did roll all over Tennessee and that was a joy to watch! I even got to watch some of the World Series. Looks like the Phillies could wrap it up in game 5. I did not have to do any yard work! YAY! The fall is here and the lawn is not growing much. I really don’t mind mowing, I just wish it didn’t take so much time to do. I also had to put a couple new tires on the Chevy Blazer, which is the vehicle I drive most of the time. That did not take too long either. I got two nights sleep of 7 hours or more. When I can sleep a little extra on the weekend it helps me get through the week when I usually get 6 hours or less per night Monday through Friday. But in another month my schedule should be easier as a lot of projects will be completed.

Okay, time to do the comics update!

New Man 4 Page 11 Pencils Panel 1

Project New Man # 4:

The work on the new pages continue. I thought I would let you in on the process a bit by showing you pencils from the pages this week and then next week we’ll get back to our regular story line.

I appreciate your patience in all this. I just have had far too much going on and I did not prepare enough ahead of time to get the new pages done by the deadline. I’m still new to this web comics gig.

One thing that caught me a little off guard was how rusty at drawing comic pages I was. I have been drawing clip art and art for t-shirt designs for the past 23 years so I did not anticipate having a problem getting back into the comic book groove, but I did. It was not your typical artist block because I knew what to draw but it was the “how to draw it” that was throwing me for a loop. I wanted to continue in the same style I drew pages 7-10, but that was work I had done 16 years previously! As with most artists my style had evolved and going back, it seems, is not so easy. Page 11 may not be exactly as it would have been had I continued the pencils after page 10 back in 1992 but I think I came close. Actually by page 13 I became a lot more comfortable with it.

As I did with the October 17th Update, I’ll give you a little background on how this process works. I penciled rough thumbnail sketches of each page first and then sent these to Freazie for scripting with my story notes. While he was scripting, and he has most of the script on the remainder of this issue complete now, I started the full size pencil pages. I have a Comics Page Set-up Template in my computer I can open up in Adobe Illustrator which I print out on 11 x 17 copy paper. This is just a regular sheet of 20 lb bond copy paper, something I started drawing clip art and t-shirt art on 10-15 years ago instead of using bristol or some heavier more expensive paper stock. It has my borders and panel guides indicated. I print out my thumbnail sketch enlarged to 11 x 17 and put this on a light box. With my comic page blank over it I trace off in non-photo blue pencil the outline of the sketch I did previously. Then I take my blue line tracing to the drawing board and with a regular #2 graphite pencil go to work filling in the panels. I can pencil 2-3 pages a day in an 8 hour period if uninterrupted. I have done as many as 6 in one day but I really have to be on a creative roll to do that! It’s not something I’ve done very often. Usually I start out slow and the first page does not come together as fast as the next two. I seem to speed up the more I do on a given day.

Here’s a little penciling side tip: When penciling pages for comics in graphite it’s nearly impossible not to smudge the pencils while working over them. What happens is is the graphite gets on the side of your hand and is transferred back to the paper. To cut down on this I keep a box of Wet Ones handy so I can wipe my hand periodically always being careful to dry my hand with a Kleenex or paper towel before starting back on the next panel.

Tomorrow and the rest of this week I’ll share a pencil page with you and maybe have some comments as we go. Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

Humants 3 Page 29 Fan Pic

Humants #3:

Here’s the second page of our very first Legacy Letters Page we had ready to go way back in 1992 when we had to cease publication. Not only do we have some interesting fan letters from our 1991-92 publications but we have some fan art as well! These were done by a fellow by the name of Chris Seaman who was at the time publishing his own comic book called Harry Shag. I don’t remember if he showed this to us at an convention or it was something he sent to Freazie. We always got a real kick out of interacting with fans at the conventions. We never knew what we would hear or see next! Everyone was always most supportive and encouraging. One thing about our early publishing I recall is, we had almost no complaints or criticisms. This was amazing to me, but I guess folks saw we were just starting out and had mercy on the obvious warts and gaffs in our work.

We’ll finish out this issue with some pin up pages and a couple of unused covers. Next week Humants # 4 will burst on the scene! Stay tuned!

Humants 3 Page 30 Sojourner

Humants #3:

Today for page 30 we have a very nice pin-up of that Martial Arts Master Humant known as Sojourner. Freazie White, Jr. did all this one on his own back in 1991 just prior to our big convention tour. Great job, Freazie! We wanted some pin up style art to have on hand at the tables to sell so each of us did a few of various Legacy characters.

Sojourner comes from the middle east. We’ll have a bio on him in the next issue.

Coming up next: we have a special pin-up of The Herald in store for you tomorrow, then a look at Christopher Torres Humants pencils for the cover of #4 and our next issue preview and the color back cover. Next week Humants # 4 will make it’s World Wide Web debut! Stay tuned!

Project New Man # 4:

More pencils for you to see. I started knocking off some of the rust with page 12 and started picking up some speed to boot.

New Man 4 Page 12 Pencils Panel 1

I could have just penciled these last chapters of The Haunted Man in my current style of drawing but I wanted to have as much consistency as possible in that issue. Freazie and I tried to do that in each issue but often fell below expectations.

The original Image Comics style which actually started at Marvel with Art Adams, Jim Lee and Rob Liefield was a hot prospect in the early 90’s. They were actually better when they started, unfortunately as time went on the artists over did the trend they had begun. As on friend of mine said, who had been an art instructor, “There is only so much detail the human eye can pick up”. His point was they were over working the art, which to some extent I believe was true.

Something for artists to keep in mind where comic books and comic strips are concerned is the focus should be on the story telling more so than the art. Sure we want good looking art but not to the point it distracts from the story. All the pros I ever had access to prior to the 1990’s would tell me to strive to achieve a balance. The late, great Alex Toth said over and over, “It’s not what you draw, but what you don’t draw.” I may be paraphrasing slightly but the essence is there. An artist must make use of everything at his disposal including negative space to keep a reader interested. One of the complaints I heard about the Image Style was it would not hold the readers interest. Still, they sold a lot of books, at least early on. But as I eluded to earlier I think they did it better when they started before they got so involved with the detail. Some of their early art was simpler but still rich in detail and easier to follow. One of the best examples of this and most consistent of the Image artists was Eric Larson.

Well, I’m out of time for rambling today. More tomorrow. See ya!

Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

Welcome back! Hope you enjoy Wednesday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

The Presidential Election is less than a week away! This is possibly the most important election in our history, not because of who is running but because of the time frame we are in. We are at a Juncture of Change and regardless of who wins the change is going to come. We have been in it for several years now, we are moving from one age to another. On the surface is the obvious change of moving from the Industrial Age into the Digital Age and all the facets of it. On a deeper level we are changing as a people, a culture, a nation and most importantly as individuals. It is the individual role which is key and how the individual is accountable to the people, culture and nations. Politics as usual are dead on every level. We won’t take any more excuses. We won’t accept any more scape goats. Our leaders will either stop the blame game and accept the responsibility to do what they promised, as we have, or we will vote someone in who will. Individual character will be the guide for accountability, not Party Affiliation, race, gender or any of the Old School stereotypes. People everywhere are realizing these things and you can bet it will be apparent come November 4th, but it won’t stop there. Whoever wins will be under constant scrutiny,  this is after all the Digital Age. Every second counts, ever vote counts, and we are all accountable.

End of soapbox, time to do the comics update!

Humants 3 Page 31 The Herald

Humants #3:

This pin-up of The Herald was done while we were on our 1991 Convention Tour. I penciled it in the motel room the night before we were to make one of our appearances. I don’t remember which convention it was. I sat at the table the next day inking it as comic fans came by to talk with Freazie and I. I got a lot of compliments and interest in what I was doing. We made copies and sold them at the next convention and planned on using it as a cover on one of the Humants books. It would have been the cover on issue 4 but Christopher Torres came up with something we felt was more appealing for the time to use as the cover for number 4.

Coming up next: We’ll a look at those Christopher Torres Humants pencils for the cover of #4, then our next issue preview and the color back cover. Next Tuesday Humants # 4 will be unleashed!

Project New Man # 4:

These pencils are for page 13. I had 3 panels at the top of this page which showed an action I wanted to zero in on in the story telling. The drawing of Cyber-Tech is actually the background, the main action is what’s happening with his eyes and the circuit jammer module which was attached to him in issue 3 to render him immobile.

New Man 4 Page 13 Pencils Panel 1-3

I could have have penciled each panel just as I did on my original breakdowns, but we live in the age of PhotoShop, so to save time and to create a stronger sense of continuity and even motion in these 3 panels I copied and pasted the drawing of Cyber-Tech I drew in panel one to panels 2 and 3. The same thing can be done at the inking stage as well.

Some artists don’t like this, they think every panel should be drawn out as an original. My question is always “Why? What is the purpose of what we are doing, telling a story or doing a piece of art to hang on a wall?” First of all it’s to tell the story and as I wrote yesterday we don’t want the art to become a distraction from the story. We need balance.  I think it would be more distracting to draw Cyber-tech in the same position, as best I could, in each panel because each would be different. To bring the action of the story to the forefront I only wanted to change the key elements. Plus it speeds up production so I can do even more stories if I take advantage of all the tools I have at my disposal! 😉

Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

Thursday, Oct. 30 – Legacy Comics – New Man & Humants Pencils

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Welcome to Thursday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

The winner is! Well, it was the first time a World Series game was ever suspended halfway through only to be finished a couple days later. The Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays set up shop last night in the bottom of the 5th Inning to settle the unfinished business from Monday night. By 9 P.M. Central Time it was over. You know the outcome, Phillies 4, Rays 3. The Phillies are World Champions of Baseball! Not a big surprise I’m sure. I was really pulling for the Rays but it just wasn’t their time. Congratulations to the Phillies!

Legacy News: Freazie White, Jr. and I will be re-uniting over in Humants # 5 and 6 to finish up that saga in a similar way to what we are doing to wrap up Project: New Man with issue 4 of that series. It will be the first time Freazie and I have worked together on art in 16 years! He will not only be writing but also penciling the story which I will then greedily ink and letter! I’m looking for to that! First we have to let you read all of # 4 and then 20 pages of #5 before you get to the 2008 version of Humants. Of course we will still be in the 1992 storyline but that’s just to finish the current saga. We are talking about bringing back Humants in issue 7 with an all new story as well. Stay tuned!

Now, let’s switch over to the comics section!

Humants 3 Page 32 The Humants

Humants #3:

Here’s one of Christopher Torres first masterpieces for Legacy Comics. This is the penciled version which I later got to ink for the cover of Humants #4. I think this may have been a sample page Chris sent in with some sample New Man pages as well. You’ve already seen Christopher’s awesome pencils over in Project: New Man #3 & 4, right? If you haven’t seen them what are you waiting for? Click the link in the Menu Bar above and head on over to the PNM site! After our little visit here, of course.

I can’t say enough about the work Chris did for us. Not only was he great at doing the art and could tell a story with it, he was fast too. We wanted to really utilize his talents and would have if we had had the money to continue Legacy Comics back in the 90’s. But regardless of that we are here now! Maybe we’ll be able to track Christopher down soon. We just heard from Thomas O’Connor yesterday, so anything is possible! Heck! We might get a full fledged Legacy Comics Reunion going here! It could happen! 🙂

Coming up next: Our Next Issue preview page and the color back cover for issue #3 on Monday. Next Tuesday Humants # 4 will be begin!

New Man 4 Page 14 Pencils Panel 2

Project New Man # 4:

Pencils are for page 14. As I go along on penciling these pages I’m really getting back into the groove. See, Freazie, I told you once you get back on that bike it all comes back to you!

Even though I created Cyber-Tech, he is one of my least favorite characters to pencil. Christopher Torres seemed to enjoy doing him and I think was better at it than I am. But this is the last time we see him for a while this issue so that won’t be a problem for another 10 pages or so.

Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

A TGIF Welcome to the Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Friday! Payday! First day of the weekend! Yay! Actually I enjoy everyday not just the weekends, and since I pretty much work 7 days a week it’s not like I’m taking any time off just to kick back and relax. Although I do get to sleep a little longer, almost until 6 A.M.! 😉 But I do like the change we get when we enter into the weekend, it helps to break up the work, shift into another gear, you might say.

Hope everyone has a nice and safe Halloween! Eat lots of candy and watch some College and Pro Football. It’s good and so good for you! 😉

Oh, and by the way… ROLL TIDE!

Let’s see what we have in the ol’ comics bag today!

Humants 3 Inside Back Cover

Humants #3:

We saw the pencil version yesterday of Christopher Torres first cover for Legacy Comics. Here’s Mark Poe’s inked version for the inside back cover of Humants # 3 previewing issue #4. We’ll see the full color, full size version Tuesday!

It was right along the time we were about to bring out issue #3 we started re-designing the look of our cover logo and corner logos. Looking at other comics of the time which were really hot like the Titans, the X-Men and others we came up with something we hoped would grab more attention on the comic store shelf. Unfortunately we never got the chance to see if it helped since we never got to print issue #3. Knowing what we do now about the old Comic’s Direct Market, we may not have seen any changes at all.

The Direct Market was a good concept in the beginning which was short lived. The new distributors became as bad or worse than the old Newsstand Distribution method. Proof of this was easy to see when such comics field giants like Neal Adams, Jack Kirby and John Byrne titles were canceled only a few issues into a run. John Bryne had his Danger Unlimited series only last 4 issues back in the mid 90’s. And if the big guys can’t make it, what chance has the little guy got? At first the new distributors we’re encouraging independent publishers, but soon the independents were discouraged as much as possible. Eventually 9 or 10 distributors became monopolized into 2 main distributors which soon even devolved into only one huge monopoly.

I think we were on the right track commercially and had we had just a little more time, or better yet, a lot more time, we would have broken through even in that hostile market of the day. We’re trying to pick up where we left off and go beyond those expectations as well. If not for the New Direct Market we call the World Wide Web we would not have any chance at all. We are far from perfect but we’re willing to be imperfect until we can be perfect! 😉

Monday we’ll have the color back cover for issue #3 which is actually the original front cover we had slated for  that issue. Tuesday Humants # 4 will be begin!

New Man 4 Page 15 Pencils Panel 1

Project New Man # 4:

These pencils are for page 15. The design of the Fortress Foundation’s Aircar is loosely based on a concept I saw either in Popular Science or Popular Mechanics several years ago. I probably still have the magazine some where but the design in this issue is based on my memory of the images I saw and more so on just the concept.

New Man is looking out the window of the Aircar at the Power Plant which is copied and pasted into the windows from the panel above. Pretty neat, eh?

Monday we’ll start the story up again with Freazie’s script applied to the inked and lettered pages you have been seeing all this week.

Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

Monday, Nov. 3 – Legacy Comics – New Man # 4 Pg.11 & Humants # 3 Back Cover

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Welcome to the Daily Mega Comics Group Updates for Monday!

Hope you had a great weekend! Whew! Mine was filled with work, but I got most of my goals done and on time. Hope everyone had a nice and safe Halloween. My little one did not go trick Or Treating. He seems to not be as interested in that any more. I think he gets to go to carnival at school and does some things for Halloween with the Scouts and he just doesn’t need the regular Trick or Treating.

Enough catching up, let’s dig into today’s comics!

Humants 3 Back Cover

Humants #3:

Here’s the back cover for Humants #3. This was originally meant for the front cover. One of the things we were doing when this was originally meant for publication was trying to package the books in a way to maximize attention in our solicitations to the distributors and eventually on the comic shop shelf. Even though I loved the cover for #3 Freazie had done, I did not think it had enough action, it did not leap out at the reader. So I did a layout sketch and sent it to Freazie to do a new cover, which he did. So then this one became the back cover. My thoughts at the time was the original cover was great and if this was issue #30 of Humants we would just go with it. But since this was #3, and since we were trying to establish ourselves in the market we needed something a little more animated.  So what do you think? Did I make the right call as a publisher? Freazie did not like it, as most artists wouldn’t, but of course he was a professional about it and went along with me. We went through a similar thing with #4 only it was my cover this time, but I’ll clue you in on some of that tomorrow.

By the way, this ends Humants #3. Hope you enjoyed this issue. Tomorrow we start with Humants #4! YAY! 🙂

New Man 4 Page 11 Panel 2

Project New Man # 4:

Hope you enjoyed our little behind the scenes look at how we put together the pencils for each page. It was fun to show you what it’s like to do comics penciling.

Now we are back to the story. Before you start this page you might want to refresh you memory of where we are in the story. Do yourself a favor and on the PNM page click October in the calendar  below the comic to go to the thumbnails of all the pages we have posted for Project: New Man #4. You can scroll down and get a quick flashback of what lead us to this new chapter.

Let me help some too: The Fortress Fighters have to clean up the mess after the major battle between New Man and the Thunder Hawks verses Cyber-Tech. The big guy is not unconscious, his cyber-suit is just immobile due to the jammer Chief Thunder clamped unto his exoskeleton. This guy weights a ton or 2, so they have to have a special cart to lift him out to the balcony so a crane copter can haul him off to detention.

Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

Welcome back! We missed you! Time for the 2008 Election Day Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Here at last! We have survived another election cycle! PLEASE, whatever you do, go out and vote! Vote one time, please. Only live, real, voters, please! Vote for who you think will do the best job in the office. If everyone will follow these simple rules we’ll get this taken care of today and not be recounting votes until Christmas or beyond!

Now with that Public Service Announcement out of the way, let’s get to what we all came here today for, shall we? Yes, we shall! 🙂

Humants 4 Cover

Humants #4:

Today we have the debut of Humants #4. As I wrote yesterday this was not the original cover for this issue either. We’ll save that for the back cover similar to how we did the covers for # 3. The original cover was the pin-up of The Herald we featured on page 31 of last issue, which was done by none other than Mark Poe, the artist. As publisher, Mr. Poe elected to use this awesome Christopher Torres illustration instead of his own work? Why? Well, as I wrote yesterday since we were trying to establish a place in the market we needed the best covers which would get the distributor’s, comic shop owner’s, and fan’s attention. The original Herald cover certainly would have filled that criteria, but the Torres art was done in that often mentioned Art Adams/Jim lee Style which later lead to the beginning of Image Comics. In other words, it was HOT in the market at the time, so the publisher went with what was hot! It was not who’s art was better on this issue, or the last, but really only a matter of who’s cover would jump out and grab attention MORE and hopefully generate more sales! ’nuff said 😉

This issue features the all out war between the Humants and the Renegade Humants! It’s action from cover to cover as Freazie White, Jr. writes and does finished pencils over Mark Poe’s layouts and we introduce a new inker, Paul Schulze! This one would look great in color if we only had the time, but it rocks out in black and white too! Enjoy!

New Man 4 Page 12 Panel 1

Project New Man # 4:

The Fortress Fighters have all the fun don’t they? They are the ones that get to clean up after the major battle between New Man and the Thunder Hawks verses Cyber-Tech. Even though he can’t move, Cyber-Tech is fully conscious, and his cyber-suit is busy working on a way to override the jammer Chief Thunder clamped unto it to render him immobile. Using the special special lift cart, no doubt designed by Bearcat, the plan is move him across the carpeted Living Room area of the top floor of the Moriah Building out to the balcony. There a chain/cable dangling down from a hovering crane copter awaits to hook the cyborg up to, so they can then haul him off to a special detention facility. Yeah, that’s the Fortress Fighter’s plan, but Cyber-Tech has other plans!

Any questions of comments? All are welcome.

PRESIDENT OBAMA! Wednesday, Nov. 5 – Legacy Comics

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

President Obama.jpgCongratulations President Elect Obama! Welcome to Wednesday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Free at last! No recounts! YAY! 😀 Way to get out and vote, America!

History has been made in 2008! For the first time in history an African American has won the vote for the office of President of the United States of America. Let’s all get together behind him in support of the President Elect, wish him the best in transition and pray for his guidance and safety as well as that of his family. Hope they get some rest for a day or so. Lot’s of work ahead!

Our hat’s off to John McCain for the classy speech and way he conceded last night.

I would love to say more but I stayed up too late watching all this.

Okay, let’s look at some comics!

Humants 4 Inside Cover

Humants #4:

The inside front cover has the background we’ve adapted for the Humants inside covers plus a really cool illustration of the Herald which Freazie penciled back in ’91 and Mark inked just prior to kicking off the ’91 Summer Convention Tour. This is actually just part of a larger pin-up with all the Humants.

Check out the recap of last issue before you get into the story.

Also note the credits. Freazie and I swapped up a little on this one. I penciled the layouts and Freazie finished the pencils. We had a new inker by the name of Paul Schulze who reminds me of one of my favorite inkers: Terry Austin. Freazie helped out on the inks as well and I did a few touch-ups here and there, mostly there. 😉 Billy Leavell turned out some great lettering as usual and corrected our errors.

This one did not get any halftones. It would look great to color this one. Maybe I can find the time to do that soon. I’ll just add it to a very long list of things I need to do on these comics. Geeze! Anyone out there who thinks this is not a lot of work needs to hang with me just one day! But I’m loving it! 🙂

Project New Man # 4:

Cyber-Tech is not done yet it seems. His cyber-suit computers have overcome the effects of the jammer which kept him immobile. He could rip into the Fortress Fighters now but he has his focus on getting the Thunder Hawks! Looks like he maybe heading for another showdown with New Man and Chief Thunder. Stay tuned!

VISIONS OF JOY! Thursday, Nov. 6 – Legacy Comics

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Young Obama with Sister, Mother, and Grandfather Welcome to a new day! Welcome to Thursday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Heartwarming images of celebrating America the Free!

Obama FamilyI’ve been seeing images on the TV Newscasts of African Americans celebrating the election of Barack Obama for President, which are very touching. People everywhere are elated that now for the first time in our history African American parents can tell their kids that they really can be anything they dream of, even President of the United States. That’s good! Very, very good! We all have a lot to be proud of and thankful for today. 🙂

Okay, before I start bawling like a baby, let’s dig into some comics!

Humants 4 Page 1

Humants #4:

Page 1 of Humants #4. Ah, now that all the preliminaries are out of the way we can get into the story again.

As you may recall, Chaosta and the Herald had just met for the first time and, as is their nature, they don’t come out shaking hands or exchanging hugs, no these two have to have a knockdown, drag out, slobber knocking, good old fashioned, street brawl! But while they are having all that fun knocking each other from rooftop to rooftop, Mageddon has appeared to one Johnathan Towers, a local crime boss and empowered him, along with several of his henchmen, into the first crop of Renegade Humants! While they all stand around chatting and crackling with new found power who do you think suddenly, literally crashes the little Renegade Party? Yep, who else? So now we have the Herald and Chaosta on the same side, as they should be, face to face with some real trouble! Hang on folks, it’s about to get fast and furious!

Whew! How’s that for an instant recap? 🙂

Project New Man # 4:

Cyber-Tech has freed himself from the chains of the portable lift and finding his jet pack on the balcony where he had left it when he first attacked the Moriah Building back in Project: New Man # 2. Ignoring the hail of bullets from the Fortress Fighters he clamps the jetpack to his back and ignites the rockets then blasts off. He realizes he screwed up the plans Ebeneezer Baal had established but he is so filled with hate for the Thunder Hawks, particularly Chief Thunder, he refuses to give up. Still damaged from his battle with New Man and not sure he wants anymore of that, he heads off after the Fortress Foundation Aircar containing New Man, Chief Thunder and Kamikaze which only minutes ago lifted off heading for the location Tom Thumb had pinpointed as Baal’s hideout.

I seem to be recapping everything this morning. What’s up with that? 😐

This page marks the close of Chapter 11 of The Haunted Man story line. We’ll take a long weekend for New Man this week and not start the new chapter until Monday. HOWEVER, Humants # 4 page 2 will be up tomorrow as scheduled and this blog will also be updated.

OBAMA ON SAGGY PANTS! Friday, Nov. 7 – Legacy Comics

Friday, November 7th, 2008

TGIF! Welcome to Friday’s Daily Mega Comics Group Updates!

Obama on the issues!

This is great! Regardless of whether you voted for him or not you gotta admit the guy is smart, witty and cool. When I saw this, I thought it was the funniest thing I had seen through out this entire campaign, and it gave me a glimpse a side of Barack Obama I had not really seen before. 🙂

Now wipe that smile off your face, soldier! We’ve got some serious comics to investigate here! 😉

Humants 4 Page 2 & 3

Humants #4:

Whew, boy! Now that’s a nasty looking bunch of baddies if I’ve ever seen one. Actually we saw them last issue, but somehow new inker Paul Schulze seems to make them just a wee bit badder, don’t ya think?

Just in case you left your score card in voting booth the other day, here’s the line up starting up front: The Tower,  then to the back left to right: Perimeter: Master of Munitions, Smasher Quinn, & Shyster: Manipulator of Minds.

Mageddon has empowered them to aid him in his war on humanity and there chief job description is to oppose Omnispawn’s group of Humants so he can go about dissecting our world little by little and unhindered. He also draws sustenance from the Renegade Humants very existence, like some kind of energy vampire.

So what if they decide they don’t want to be his servants. Well, then… oops we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Soon, web wayfarer, soon!

Pages 2 and 3 we’re meant to be double page spreads, but with WordPress/ComicPress that’s difficult to do. I’ve posted page 2 here as normal but also supplied this link to pages 2 & 3 joined together as they are meant to be. I’ll post page 3 Saturday with this same text. That way we can pick up the story Monday and you won’t have to see page 3 again since you can see and read it now via this special link, but everything will still in the proper order in the Archives and the RSS feeds. Monday we’ll pick up the story with page 4. Enjoy!

New Man 4 Page 14 Panel 3

Project New Man # 4:

I posted this page, which marks the close of Chapter 11 of The Haunted Man story line, yesterday. We’ll take a long weekend for New Man this week and not start Chapter 12 until Monday.

Why? Well, for a number of reasons: one, I’ve got some other deadlines to meet and two, being up too late Election Night,  I’m just too tired to do the extra work this week. Plus you have a 2 page spread for Humants # 4 today.

Due to my heavy workload right now we may go to a 3 day, Monday, Wednesday, & Friday schedule for New Man while maintaining the Humants and MCG blog daily updates. We’ll go over all of it Monday. Thanks for your support and have a great weekend!

Any questions or comments? All are welcome.
