Project: New Man 1 Page 17
When all seems lost…walk away? WOW! The all American hero has a shady past! Not as original now but this was back in 1990, remember? And just what the heck is he doing in that last panel, giving up? Sure looks like New Man has quit and literally turned his back on the situation! This couldn’t be part of his new government sanctioned Fortress Foundation training…or could it?
Mark’s Remarks:
Trying to convey the emotion of a bad situation in a 2 dimensional medium is sometimes a challenge. Even though this page is basically “talking heads” as some have called it, when penciling the story I was trying to express the range of emotions going on in this life or death struggle. We have 3 perspectives here. The Mall Killer who is obviously nuts but we can sort of understand why with what he’s been put through with the Vietnam War and his role in it. The guy’s mind has snapped! He is fearful, angry and confused. The victim is terrified and certain she is going to die any second now. Dave Davison a.k.a. New Man is frustrated, anxious and sad to see someone whom he once shared missions with in the war fall to this level while at the same time concerned with saving an innocent bystander’s life. Freazie and I tried to build the tension and drama to this point for a surprise clamatic ending…. which we’ll see on the next page… Monday.
