Running a bit behind so I will save comments for tomorrow.

My artwork at this point was influenced mostly by Jack Kirby and John Byrne . Byrne was always imitating certain aspects of Kirby’s work so the two influences complimented each other. Kirby influenced my layout and dynamic sense in the penciling. I always tried to get the most action packed pencils I could or in the case of quite scenes, such as this one, the most interesting angles in telling the story. Telling the story with pictures was always Jack Kirby’s priority!

In finishing the pencils, I was trying to use Byrne’s inking style along with a good dose of Terry Austin and some Joe Sinnott. I like to keep the art clean with a good balance of contrast and detail.

Originally Freazie was going to pencil over my layouts on this and the next chapter of The Haunted Man storyline. Freazie was not real comfortable working over my pencils even though he did a great job, he needed the freedom to create from scratch. So after a bit of help on pages 5 & 6 I did the rest of the pencils, inks and tones. The tones were from Duo-Shade board. They have been used on books by John Byrne, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles books and others. Duo-Shade is fun to work with and often looks great on the originals but sometimes don’t print on paper very well. They tend to muddy up. I decided after seeing this on in print in Humants # 2, I would do something else next time.

Here begins The Experiment that transforms David “Killer Kane” into New Man. Of course any good superhero origin tale begins it’s scientific projects in the lab surrounded by mad scientist types, ya know.! Baw-HaHaHaHaHaHa!

Mark’s Remarks: As you may have noticed… The art has undergone a slight transformation in the past few pages. These are all mine, pencils & inks in my John Byrne period of expression! Well, at least me doing my best to do art work like Byrne!
